How Sportswear Has Changed Over The Years

Over the years sportswear has dramatically changed to adapt to the times. Originally sportswear was solely practical and simple, women's tennis clothing for example, women would wear long skirts that covered their ankles and long-sleeved blouses that would keep them modest while still being flexible for the sport. Compared to now where women in tennis have sportswear that is suited to the fast-paced environment, while also keeping fashionable.

?As years have passed and technology has advanced, along with it, so has sportswear…

Going back in time to 1970 – 1990, Nike and Adidas emerged changing the game for sportswear! Suddenly sportswear shifted to become a daily item in everyone’s wardrobe and became a statement piece of style and practicality. This cultural shift influenced the progression of enhancing the user's experience by thinking about comfort, performance, practicality, and style. Bold colours began to feature largely, clothing items became statement pieces representing the individual or group.

?During this time, the inventions of moisture-wicking fabric and air-cushioned soles were being developed and released, starting a wave of innovation within the industry! Elastane (Lycra) and polyamide (Nylon) were the main fabrics used during this time after being founded in 1962 and 1938, these drastically changed how clothing was presented, polyamide and elastane could be combined to enhance the stretch and comfort of clothing which made it a top choice to use for sportswear.

As the 2000s emerged, fashion took a step forward and dominated the sportswear industry, integrating casual wear into the mix. Many people began to utilise sportswear in different scenarios, increasing the demand for it! Around this time sustainable clothing was a secondary concern to most, it hadn’t yet been realised that production and pollution were affecting our planet.

Technical advancements pushed forward, and in the 2010s 3D printing had increased production and influenced ideas. Smart fabrics were being introduced into the market creating a change within the clothing industry. Sustainability had become a major concern; people became aware of the pollution that came from the clothing industry and demanded changes! Recycled materials and eco-friendly production methods became a top priority and companies decided to start considering the afterlife of their products. Even though recycled polyester was founded in 1993 it began to emerge into the market with recycled cotton, it became worth the small extra cost and proved environmental responsibility for a lot of clothing manufacturers, especially in the sportswear industry. Recycled polyester became one of the most popular fabrics in sportswear because of its elasticity, moisture- wicking and durability.

After years of development, sportswear has become a science of its own, and brands around the world are perfecting it! Gym uniforms, leisure uniforms, personal trainer uniforms, and more, have adapted over time to prioritize the comfort and style of the uniform to this fast-paced occupation. Much like sportswear, uniforms have adapted over the years and reflect the technical advancements that are changing the clothing industry!
