How to Spark Creativity in Brainstorming Sessions: Part 2

Hello, Friends!

I hope you're all doing well! In the first part of "How to Spark Creativity in Brainstorming Sessions," we explored the basics of brainstorming. If you missed it, you can catch up with the link provided.

How to Spark Creativity in Brainstorming Sessions: Part 1

Today, let's delve deeper into methodologies, starting with the 5 Why Analysis.

Don't worry; when I say "methodologies," I'm not talking rocket science. These techniques are simple and rooted in human psychology, making them easy to apply in our daily lives. They're particularly useful in the analysis phase of DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control), especially when we lack substantial data on the factors involved.

5 Why Analysis: Exposure to the Root Cause

This technique is one of the most efficient problem-solving methods for continuous improvement, accessible to anyone aiming to identify and address the root cause of issues, both personal and professional.

But before we dive into analysis, we need to approach it with an open mind, confidence, and honesty to uncover the heart of the problem.

Story Time: A Lesson from My Garden

Let's kick off with a recent problem involving my friend, a guava tree. Despite being a part of our family for over two years, it had only grown three feet tall by February '24. I've always had an emotional connection with plants, considering them as part of the family. However, I hadn't paid much attention to this tree until recently, as my mom usually took care of it, and I only visited sporadically due to its location in a tight space.

One day, I noticed that my friend, the guava tree, seemed to be struggling and looking rather dull.

The Back Story: Revealing the Mystery

As mentioned earlier, the tree's location was cramped, hindering its access to sufficient sunlight for photosynthesis and limiting its growth due to the small pot it was planted in. Moreover, the area attracted pests and insects, further hampering its development.

The 5 Whys: Peeling Back the Layers

Let's dig deeper into the problem:

Why did the Guava Tree Look Dull?

Why-1: Why isn't the plant growing and looking dull?

Answer: I haven't been paying attention to the plant.

Why-2: Why haven't I been paying attention to the plant?

Answer: The plant's location is cramped, and I'm afraid of snakes and insects that frequent the area.

Why-3: Why are snakes and insects visiting, and how can I save the plant? Answer: The nearby farms and crop fields attract them. We can save the plant by relocating it to the backyard, where it can receive ample sunlight and space to grow.

And that's how I found the solution and made my new friend happy! A happy ending indeed!

How Many Whys?

You might wonder how many times you need to ask "Why." The answer is simple: ask until you uncover the root cause of the problem. Sometimes, it only takes one or two whys, while other times, it may take ten or even a hundred. So keep asking until you reach your destination!

A Bonus Question for You

Here's a bonus question to ponder: Why am I not fit? Or why am I feeling weak? Or why am I experiencing significant hair fall lately? Or why does the coffee taste terrible?
