Micro Videos in Social Media

Micro Videos in Social Media

#BeCreative is part of this month's publishing series where professionals explain how to harness creativity in times turmoil and growth.

It doesn't take a social media guru to tell you video is not the future of social advertising, it's the present. Ever wonder why Instagram numbers are soaring and that's where the young people go? It's those pesky 3-15 second videos. It's human beauty personified on demand. Micro video are typically created on mobile phones or tablets and engage with the real world. Content has to be rich, captivating and tell a visual story, and what could be better than micro videos for this?

In 2015 what is a social media campaign without video? If you work in social media or digital marketing and don't know how to create videos, better learn fast. Video content marketing is perhaps the biggest social media trend of 2015. Anybody can make a video. This is not something you have to hire a consultant or an agency for, throw that mentality out the window please and start being creative!

I believe one of most persuasive trends in social media and digital marketing are micro videos and micro video content. If Instagram and facebook are any indication, these videos are not only trending but fit two very important parameters of audiences:

  • Mobile device audiences
  • Low attention span or multi-channel surfers

This is important because increasingly people have many devices on at the same time and many channels competing for their attention.

What I have noticed

  • They flourish on channels set to autoplay
  • Most effective videos have the human face
  • Use effects like slow motion or other effects
  • Are typically set to repeat (giving automatic replay)
  • Usually have engaging audio
  • Help brands leverage user-generated video content
  • Micro videos are ideal for emotional targeting of brands

According to facebook:

  • 75% increases in video positing on Facebook in 2015 than in 2014
  • 88% of brands on Instagram have shared at least one video

Why Video

  • Good videos get shares and may go viral
  • Video content is the most compelling and 'human'
  • Captures attention more effectively
  • Caters to mobile media consumption
  • Easy to track & gain insight of exposure and engagement with Video
  • Real-time video sharing is the holy grail of contemporary social media

Where to share micro videos

  • Instagram
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Youtube
  • Vine (owned by Twitter, videos loop)
  • Snapchat
  • Pinterest
  • Vimeo
  • Daily Motion
  • Your blog (as a video header to an article)
  • InstaVid
  • Hyperlapse

Ideas for Micro Video

  • Make contests that get customers or users to make micro videos on a particular topic
  • Experiment with allowing customers to post micro-video product reviews
  • Create micro videos to supplement or encapsulate key points of your articles
  • Use youtube celebrities, vloggers and micro-vloggers as major social influencers

Michael Spencer, What a great post! As a data scientist at HP, I am firmly behind doing more to promote bigger and bigger data. Do you know how many hard drives we are going to sell to people who are analyzing videos as part of their datasets? The hadoop cluster for such a thing hasn't been built yet. But I am certain it will be. What a wonderful challenge. Mining Vines data. Very cool.

You are correct in your analysis Michael Spencer. Videos are on the rise in the Internet. Almost all vendors use video as a tool to promote their products. Even, video resume are on the rise. I won't mind if LinkedIn also keeps an item for 1 minute video profile in its default profile format. Then, it can be accessed just by clicking our profile photo. What do you think?
