How SMART are You?

How SMART are You?

Let’s talk goals. I know, I know. It’s a topic that we either love or hate. It’s not because we don’t have goals, but because the process for creating, implementing, measuring and evaluating the goals can be daunting.

The SMART goal process has been the most widely accepted method for writing goals; but if not given guidelines, it can pose the following challenges:

  1. Difficulty capturing the true essence of the process. In other words, without clarity of how to effectively create each area; one can find themselves overcomplicating the process.
  2. Difficulty implementing the process to short-term and long-term goals. Because of the time component within the process, one can become challenged when to use the steps.
  3. Difficulty translating your expectations of how to use SMART goals to others. How many times have you asked your team to write SMART goals, and they just didn’t “measure” up? LOL! Without the proper training and understanding of what is expected, you might receive various interpretations of goal writing.

In other words, no matter how efficient the SMART goals process, we could all use some fine-tuning. To assist you and your team with writing effective goals, I wanted to share this SMART Goal Flow Chart with you. It’s a simple step-by-step checklist that will guide you through writing your SMART goals.
