How smart is AI? Not smart enough.

The world is abuzz about AI and how it's going to revolutionize our future in both good and bad ways. Hardly a day goes by when we don't see an article in a major publication about it. Truth be told, we've been fascinated by it and have been looking at various AI tools to help interpret sentiment and perceptions in conversational text that we collect on our platform. So, I decided to do a little experiment.
How accurate is it?
Knowing that there's a lot about me and articles I've written on the Internet, I asked the ChatGPT AI generator to write "a short essay about Jonathan Stamell, also known as Jon Stamell." That should be simple I thought. I'm not famous by any means but a simple google search reveals a lot - photos, articles, books, clients, kids, wedding, contributions and so on. It should be easy.
Here's what I got back:

Overall, Jonathan Stamell, also known as Jon Stamell, is a respected entertainment lawyer and producer who has made a significant impact in the entertainment industry. His legal and creative work has earned him recognition and praise from his peers, and his contributions to the entertainment industry are likely to continue for years to come.
Here's what they got right: A law firm with the name Stamell & Schager, LLP exists. That's it.
I'm not a lawyer. The law firm mentioned is in New York, not LA. It is a boutique firm but has nothing to do with the music or entertainment industry. I know about this because it's my brother's firm and the closest he ever got to producing films was being in a video at one of his daughter's weddings.
What can AI do well?
Give it a few or many paragraphs of text. Ask it to rewrite the text as a cohesive essay and it does an acceptable job. But don't expect it to do research or at least accurate research. You still have to do all the basic work. You still have to use your own critical thinking and analytical abilities, and don't expect a point of view. So if asked to compare Moliere to Shakespeare and provide your POV, you better start reading.
AI does have a future but so do humans. We both have to be trained but only one can do creative thinking...at least for now.

1 年Very instructive. Makes we want to give it a try for me. :-) Suggest we all take a pause and deep breath before a headlong jump onto this bandwagon. Has it merits, such as coding open ends for survey research and other simpler, less personally impactful applications, and will get more reliable over time. But, the risk/reward is problematic as Google (which initially ducked on it) and now Microsoft is now discovering.
