How a small village in India became the "Cleanest Village in Asia"

Can community-led sustainability make a difference?

Well, let me share with you a compelling story of sustainability that comes all the way from a small village in India.

In the village of Mawlynnong, which is located in the northeastern state of Meghalaya, a remarkable tradition has been followed for generations.

The villagers have a deep-rooted respect for nature, and their efforts to protect the environment have led to Mawlynnong being recognized as the "Cleanest Village in Asia" by Discover India.

The villagers' approach to waste management is truly innovative. Every household has its own waste management system, and the waste is separated into biodegradable and non-biodegradable categories.

Biodegradable waste is used to make compost, which is then used as fertilizer for their farms. Non-biodegradable waste is sent to a regional waste management facility.

But that's not all. The villagers have also created a network of bamboo dustbins throughout the village, ensuring that littering is strictly prohibited. The streets are swept clean every day, and the villagers also plant and maintain trees in the village to combat deforestation.

This tradition of sustainability has been passed down from generation to generation, and the villagers take great pride in maintaining their pristine surroundings.

The village has now become a popular tourist destination, and visitors are amazed by the cleanliness and natural beauty of the area.

The success of Mawlynnong demonstrates that sustainability is not just a buzzword but a way of life that can be adopted and passed down through generations.

It's an inspiring example of what can be achieved when a community comes together to protect and preserve the environment.

We can all learn from Mawlynnong's example and strive to reduce our impact on the environment by adopting sustainable practices in our daily lives.

Wow, indeed an absolutely inspiring information to be emulated by each & every individual to make the world a better place…??

The most important fact is the efforts of sustainability and hygiene are getting monetized by revenue from tourism. India is vast. Rural diversity and heritage offer tremendous potential for tourism in rural areas. Rural tourism in India is envisioned to generate employment opportunities, and sustainable livelihood for the local community by addressing the issues of poverty reduction and developing a vibrant local economy through the revival and regeneration of the old art and crafts and preservation of the rural Indian culture. As founder-director of www.gdmtravel.com start-up promoting rural tourism am looking at the example with great interest. Hope will be able to connect and collaborate with local entrepreneurs, farmers, and villages. My contact details are Mail:[email protected], Ph: 8606726831
