If there was one thing synonymous with small businesses, it is the difficulty of breaking into the market. It is never an easy task as the small business cycle is always filled with obstacles that need overcoming.
However, in an ironic twist of reality, marketing barely makes it to the top five priority objectives of small businesses, making it even more complex. Most times, the concern is about funding, the technology, the product, and the brand itself.
It is no surprise that they eventually encounter difficulties in achieving their goals as marketing, which is the important factor that sets the winds in their sails, gets relegated to the bottom.
What becomes the fate of small businesses?
How can they go past the obstacle of taking their marketing to another level?
The good news is that it is not all doom and gloom. As they say, there is light at the end of the tunnel, but only brands with a roadmap to get there will find it. With content marketing, small businesses can bridge that gap and take their business to another height.
While content marketing will get you there, you won’t get the results you want if you think of just putting out random content and hoping they will do magic. You will only end up digging your business into deeper holes because it won’t.
Content marketing is only potent when a strategy serves as a blueprint for the expected success. Without a strategy, you will end up “spraying and praying” with your content, hoping that some miracle happens.
It never works that way with marketing.
The miracle of marketing is in having a content strategy. A content strategy is what gives your content marketing clarity, direction, and purpose, ultimately helping you achieve your desired results.
How, then, can you get there?
These four pillars of content marketing can enable you to accelerate your content marketing from ground zero to the level you want.
1. Clarity of objective
Having clarity of what you want to achieve with your content marketing should be akin to the foundation of your content marketing. When you know what you want to achieve and how to go about it, you set the wheels rolling for every other piece of activity that will follow.
2. Identify what to measure
After the wheels have begun to roll and the pieces of your content marketing are taking shape, it becomes important to know what you want to measure. There are multiple areas that small businesses can choose to measure ranging from website traffic, social media engagements, lead generation, etc.
3. How to measure
How to measure becomes a priority point as what is being measured is what determines what is more important to the business and the overall goal of your content marketing. Over time, everything will begin to take shape.
4. Use the insights
After all the hard work has been put in place and all that needs measuring has been measured, it becomes feasible to start using insights gathered over a given period which could be monthly, quarterly, or yearly. These insights will eventually become what gives direction to the next phase of your content marketing.
Will accelerating your content marketing come easy?
It won’t, but it will be well worth it in the long run.

2 年This is a great article, Joy. It really highlights the challenges of marketing not being high in the agenda for some all businesses. This often leads to them trying to deliver this themselves without a well-thought content strategy or measurable objectives.
