HOW SLOW CAN YOU GO? ***FREE TALK w/ John Patrick Morgan***
John Patrick Morgan
I lead the exodus for high-achievers - helping them leave behind the golden handcuffs of corporate life and step into the freedom, fulfillment, and financial independence of coaching.
My seven-year-old son Asher is currently kicking my ass in chess. He’s only been playing for six months and I legitimately can not beat him anymore.?
Of course, my son is a genius (because he’s my kid), but another reason he keeps beating me, I know, is that?I haven’t slowed down enough?to consider the vulnerabilities of my moves before making them.
No surprise here, as every coach I’ve ever had has said the same three words to me:
“Slow down, John.â€
Be it a fitness coach, life coach, or business coach, they have all seen my habit of going as fast as I can.
Of course, there are upsides to going hard and fast at everything, but the costs are big too.?
Another case in point; I haven’t gone for a hike or run since I turned 45 in December.? As a cherry on top of my 44th year, which I called the Year of Enduring, for my birthday I summited the volcano I live on in?sandals?and then, a couple of days later, I couldn’t walk on my right foot. A few weeks after that, when my foot was nearly healed, I rolled my ankle chasing my three-year-old more aggressively than I needed to because I was angry that he wasn’t listening to me.
Going fast has high costs when it is not counterbalanced by slowing down.
My new fitness coach, Ryan Hurst at GMB Fitness, has told me to “slow down†each time I’ve asked a question in the first three sessions. I had to laugh, but at the same time, I joined his coaching program because?slowing down?is what he and GMB are all about.
For example, last week when I was proudly explaining my approach of doing five pull-ups every time I walked through my creating studio doorway (as opposed to my old approach of doing as many as possible), he said…
“John, I love it, but I want you to do just one pull-up instead of five.â€
My eyebrows leaped up my forehead, but Ryan continued.

“I want you to explode upward into the pull-up and then come down as slow as you possibly can.â€
As soon as he prescribed this, I realized why he was saying it. The?slowing down would create greater strength?where in the movement it was needed. What blew me away though was how obvious it was once he said it and yet how obfuscated it was from my view due to my habit of going fast.
What I’m finding through being coached by Ryan is that?when I think I’ve slowed down, there is always a way to go even slower.?
Just as there is a diminishing return on going faster and faster, there is too in going slower and slower, but what I’m waking up to is that I’m nowhere near that ‘too slow’ threshold.?
In this month’s?free talk, I’ll share what I’m discovering about slowing down. This won’t be about chess or fitness but about the?inner challenge and liberation of slowing down whatever we are doing in life.
One place I have?learned to slow down?is in conversation?and, even more specifically,?in the cultivation of relationships.?
For example, most people suck at sales because they try to go too fast. In my thirty years as an entrepreneur, I have blown more deals by going too fast than I’ve made by going slow. However, I’ve persisted in learning how to slow down in that domain more than any other and so I’ve at least figured out how to sell effectively by going slowly.
Besides my newest discoveries around slowing down, I will bring also a bunch of?practical insight?into the how and merits of slowing down the creation of relationships, be they clients, friends, mentors, or intimate partners.?
