How skilled are you at business leadership?
The Manufacturers' Alliance
Inspiring Progressive Manufacturing Leaders to break through the boundaries of possibility.
It’s August 2024, and we’re well into the Olympic season in Paris. Hundreds of athletes have been preparing for their big moment and are aiming to take home a gold medal. They have undoubtedly done their best during their training period to produce the results on the day.
The athletes performing at their peak are surrounded by a team of coaches, psychologists, nutritionists, physios, therapists and many other specialists that enable them to perform to such a high standard. My question to you, as person responsible for leading a team is… what and how much support do you have around you to develop and maintain your skills as a leader?
Leadership is a skill that can be learned, the same as, swimming, boxing, basketball, or the high jump. Wouldn’t you agree? You show some early signs of leading people, you lift your head above the parapet, you get recognised and you’re on the leadership ladder. You are thrust into the world of leading people and surrounded by a team of coaches and specialists to help you.
I would say for a minority of people in business, this is how it pans out. You get all the support you need to lead a team well. But for most of us, we are thrust into the responsibility of leading teams without the support structure around us. We may get put on a 2-day management training course or have a manager that shadows us and points out all our mistakes, but other than that, there isn’t much development help.
Could we treat business leadership like an Olympic sport?
Imagine a world where we treated business leadership like an Olympic sport. We had people leading teams that wanted to be the best version of themselves. We got excited about leading well. Where winning gold was having a high performing team, that were all highly engaged and delivering great results. Where our leaders had teams of coaches, psychologists, nutritionists, and therapists helping them to maintain peak performance throughout their career. An infrastructure that was tailored to the needs of each individual leader, their learning style, their character, and helping them to play to their strengths. Would you be interested in an infrastructure like this?
