How to Simplify Your Idea Without Losing Its Essence

I’m sure you’ve experienced it before. You have an amazing, multidimensional idea swirling around in your head. It feels so clear to you, ringing out like a gong of inspiration. But then you sit down to put this brilliant concept into words, and suddenly it all falls apart. The clarity crumbles into a jumbled mess of complexity.
I’ve been there many times. In my experience, it’s one of the most frustrating parts of bringing an idea to life. You’re overflowing with enthusiasm, which acts like a magnet, pulling in threads from all angles. “It’s this...but also this...and that...and what about this other thing?” Before you know it, you’re tangled in a web of possibilities.
The problem is, to share your idea with the world, you really need to hone in on one solid concept. I learned this lesson the hard way, when pitching my second book to publishers. I proudly spewed out all the amazing chapters and layers of the idea. But then a legend in the industry looked me in the eye and said, “Tell me your one big idea. Not three, not five. One.”
I was terrified. And truthfully, I couldn’t do it. At least not at first. But in the process of whittling it down, everything became clear. The book ended up anchored in a single provocative sentence that the publisher demanded. And you know what? He was absolutely right.
So how can you go from an exhilarating explosion of creativity to a singular core message? That's what I wanted to unpack in a recent conversation on the SPARKED podcast with ?? Cynthia Morris, ?? CPCC , an artist, author, and the founder of the creative studio Original Impulse.
We talk about three tips to distill multifaceted ideas into clear, focused singular concepts:
Powerful ideas must be conveyed with simplicity if we ever want to get the buy-in to both let others understand them, and also inspire those we seek to work with to rally around them. As much as we love the multidimensional visions in our minds, translating them into something tangible for others necessitates streamlining. But restraint and selectivity do not mean your message will be diluted. In fact, a singular focus aligned with your audience’s needs will only amplify the impact.
Of course, balancing creative freedom with serving others is not always easy. While authenticity matters, generosity matters just as much when sharing your gifts with the world. And, in this context, simplicity - doing the work to remove the need to wrangle and translate complexity - is one form of generosity.
With the right mindset and skills, you can move through the challenges to finally convey that brilliant idea. And trust that the clarity gained will be worth the extra effort.
