How to Show Up Consistently

How to Show Up Consistently

The last few weeks I’ve been working with a coach who has had to help me push through a lot of the business-related emotional baggage I’ve been carrying around for years.

You know how it is. You hire someone, they promise you the world, then they don’t deliver. And there are two scenarios that run through your mind: They didn’t have the skills or care to complete the offer or you’re the only one in the world this offer hasn’t worked for and it’s all your fault.

I have spent a lot of money over the last few years on coaching, programs, educational content, etc. And to be honest, none of it has worked as well as showing up and consistently putting out content that has a system of follow-through behind it.

This is something I already knew, but I needed a coach to remind me of.

It’s time to obliterate the idea that showing up and putting out consistent content and putting ourselves out there to get sales is a simple process that all of us can have a perfect mindset about all the time.

The idea we’re obliterating today:

Showing up consistently is easy.

The remake:

Showing up consistently takes intense bravery.

And if you don’t already have the following things in place, your brain will tell you it’s easier if you don’t even try. Because failure means you’re doing everything wrong. Really, failure is a part of sales because you have to make the ask. And the answer to that ask can’t always be yes (no matter what some of the pre-packaged one-size-fits-all offers out there tell you).

Here are three things you need in order to show up consistently with intense bravery:

?? 1. Have a Marketing Foundation Report. The reason why this is the first thing I do for any new client is because if you have to think too hard every time you try to show up with consistency, your brain will resist—and more often than not, it will win. When you already have a report that reminds you of who you are, what your professional goals are, and the offers you use to show up for your people, you have to think through fewer steps and more likely to beat your brain.

?? 2. Join a Supportive Business Community. I’m starting to dislike the term solopreneur. My friend Malia pointed out that none of us can do this alone, and I agree. When we’re struggling and need encouragement, there’s no one better to go to than a supportive community filled with other business experts. Odds are, they’ve been through whatever you’re going through and can give you examples of how they made it through. (If you want a recommendation for a group I frequent and love, just let me know.)

?? 3. A Mindset that Values Experimentation. It’s so hard to keep trying new things when you’ve gone through suggestions (some you paid a lot of money for) that don’t work. I’m not saying you have to let everyone have a say in what you try or that you need to try everything you hear, but do your best to stay open to experimenting. You never know when you’re going to reach your tipping point.

If we only had to face facts instead of facing people, sales and marketing language would be a lot easier to create. But, the truth is, we have to think about the people we’re communicating with and showing up for with consistency.

What Kristin is Writing/Thinking About:

If you haven’t already noticed, I’ve been working hard to show up on LinkedIn every weekday. It isn’t easy, but I have the foundational information I need to stay consistent, even on days when making content feels hard.

Have you been having a difficult time showing up consistently lately?

Maybe you need a consistency reframe. I’d love to chat about your business over digital coffee if you want help. Grab your spot here.

Kristin N. Spencer, I absolutely needed this reminder today! It’s so easy to overlook how much effort it takes just to keep showing up, especially when it feels like things aren’t moving as fast as we’d like. Thank you for your post & article today. ??

Consistency really does require bravery, I agree (she says, in a week when she's not been as consistent). For me, that bravery is in carving out time to think & reflect about how I want to show up on this platform daily, when the crushing pile of essays to grade blocks out the sun.
