How about shipping a MILLION words?

How about shipping a MILLION words?

A few days back I was thinking about having a big hairy audacious goal.

A BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal) engages people—it reaches out and grabs them in the gut. It is tangible, energizing, highly focused. People “get it” right away; it takes little or no?explanation.

And I came up with one. It is to ship a MILLION words.

Sounds crazy, right?

The moment I think about such a goal it sounds crazy and is scaring me.

But that is what such a goal is supposed to do to you.

I got this idea while I was driving one evening and I immediately paused.

And then started asking how about doing it in one year.

After a quick mental math, I learnt that it translates to ~2,740 words a day.

This further scared me.

Yet I wanted to put this out for the world to know so I am accountable for it.

So..., how about shipping a MILLION words?

Some of us have these crazy ideas that we come up with to challenge ourselves.

Whenever I have such ideas, I feel both excited and terrified at the same time.

This time, instead of keeping it to myself I'm putting it out, just to get started.

That's what it is supposed to do. Push us to get to the action.

No judgements.

No worries.

No fears.

Just action.

Shipping regularly.

Progress over perfection.

What do I get from writing that much?

I wrote earlier about my reasons for writing. They remain mostly the same.

In fact, the reasons only get sharper with every word I write and ship to the world.

This time around the biggest reason to take up such a goal is audacity.

It is going to be a very big risk because that is the nature of such a goal.

And it will challenge me in every dimension and hence I am considering it.

What will I write about?

I have not chalked out a crystal clear plan.

I might not end up creating one too.

It will be most likely very random but can make sense in the hindsight.

I will write about myself, my journey, and my goals.

I will write about learning, coaching, growth, leadership, management and more.

It will be fun because I might end up writing a lot more than what I can write now.

Where would I write?

This is quite a challenge to crack, mostly due to my own overthinking brain.

To simplify my life, I will use this website so I can get a clear space to write.

Additionally, I just started building a small little community to serve.

Hopefully, these two spaces will help me cut the clutter and stay on course.

As of now, I haven't narrowed down a way to capture the progress.

But it is not going to be too difficult too because of a clear target (1M words).

It will be difficult to maintain the run rate though and my anxiety around that.

I would've to rely on my exercise routine and get serious about meditating too.

That's big and audacious for sure, but Stephen King's advice 'On Writing' may come in handy. Good luck!
