How to Shift from Execution to Strategic Thinking

How to Shift from Execution to Strategic Thinking

Most of my clients are the “do-ers”/executors/operators. They struggle to shift from the “how” execution mindsets to the “what” strategy mindsets of their CEO/Executive. They want to shift from micro to macro thinking and be more proactive rather than reactive.

This kind of shift does not happen overnight. It requires intention and practice.

A solution I often suggest is what I call “?????? ?? ?????????????????????? ??????????????????” practice.

How to do this:

??) ?????????????? ?????? ??????????????????:

Come up with 3 overarching questions that push you to think more strategically. I often suggest that 1 out of 3 is a question your CEO likely has top of mind for them. The others are strategy questions related to your domain area(s).

Example questions:

? [CEO Question]: What are the wins and threats to the company in 3-5 years?

? [Operating Leader Question]: What could the next evolution of my role/function look like?

? [Operating Leader Question]: How would [X new product, process, partnership] support our business growth?

??) ???????? ???? ???????? ??????????: Rather than working mindlessly day in and day out, turn on your radar with these questions. Work intentionally by noticing how different meetings and conversations might support your hypothesis for answers. Put on your detective hat and have fun with this!

??) ?????????? ?????? ???????? ?????? ????????????????????: Adjust your weekly cadence so that you are carving out time to reflect and journal on your overarching questions each week. Think about each question like a research report:

? What data / evidence are you learning from work? What more can you gather yourself through research?

? What ideas are coming up for you?

? What additional questions are being raised?
