How To Shatter Your Thinking Ceiling

It may not be the most beautiful, but undoubtedly, it’s the most famous ceiling of all time. Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel between 1508 and 1512, a cornerstone of Renaissance Art.

On Instagram, there’s a hashtag called “Ceilings of the World,” which spotlights beautiful ceilings from every corner of the world.

Unfortunately, today’s article isn’t about any of those jaw-dropping, famous ceilings. Instead, it’s about an obscure ceiling that hardly gets any attention.?It’s our Thinking Ceiling.

Our thinking ceiling is the invisible barrier in our brains that keeps us from doing what we most want to do.

Suppose you’ve been trying and failing to achieve goals important to you. In that case, it could be due to your thinking ceiling—a metaphor for limiting thinking that bubbles up in our heads, and before you know it thinking ceilings are born.

The limits you perceive are nothing but your thinking ceiling.

Here are four things you can do to shatter your thinking ceilings:

  1. Everything starts with what we think. So the first step is to slow down and pay attention to what you’re thinking—be mindful of your thinking.
  2. Then identify thoughts that move you toward your desired outcome and thoughts that serve as barriers and block you from reaching your desired outcome. For example, “I’m confident I can write a book” versus “I’m not smart enough to write a book.” One thought will propel you to write the book, and the other will block you.
  3. Next, replace negative thoughts with new, favorable thoughts. Then, write down the new thoughts and practice saying them aloud for 30 days. For example, “I am confident I can write a book if I apply myself.” It took me four years to write my first book, but I wrote the book.
  4. Finally, identify new behavior needed to achieve your desired outcome—write a book—and practice that new behavior until you reach your goal. Although everything starts with our thinking, you can’t think your way to writing a book. You have to do the work.
