I met John (Not his real name) at one of my professional Association's conferences. He was a younger person but we struct it off immediately we met. John was into L & D just like myself. He ran his own company and is exceptional at what he does for a living. We exchanged business cards after the conference and kept the communication going.
John invited me to facilitate a seminar his company was running where they needed an elderly L & D professional. I did and that was how we both started a mutually beneficial relationship. I too invited John to facilitate at one of our trainings for the senior management staff of the Central Bank of Nigeria. John being exceptional was well received and that was how the relationship blossomed.
Indeed, networking gatherings sometimes resemble social obstacle courses. However, you do not need to be alarmed, my fellow experts! Imagine turning such uncomfortable situations into sincere relationships that can advance your professional development!
Here are three secrets to sharpen your networking skills and become a master connector:
The Art of Conversation: Beyond the Weather
We have all been there before. Imagine staring across a room, desperately perplexed as a conversation starter. You have to leave the small talk! Instead, craft engaging questions that spark genuine interest. Research the event beforehand. Identify key attendees and tailor questions to their expertise. For example: "What excites you most about the new trends in IT" or "I saw your recent project on "strategic positioning, can you share a behind-the-scenes insight?" These questions demonstrate initiative and set the stage for a richer conversation.

The Power of Listening: The Unsung Hero
In our fast-paced world, listening is a superpower. Give your full attention when someone speaks. Make eye contact, nod in acknowledgment, and ask follow-up questions. This shows genuine interest and allows you to discover shared passions or challenges. People remember those who truly hear them.
The Elevator Pitch: Your 30-Second Powerhouse You Can Bring to the Table
You never know who you might meet in the networking jungle. That is why having a concise and compelling elevator pitch is crucial. In 30 seconds, introduce yourself, highlight your expertise, and articulate the value you bring. Keep it clear, confident, and focused on the other person's needs. For example, "I help companies like yours reach their customers through specialized branding. Would you be interested in learning more?"
Remember, networking is a two-way street. Follow up with new connections after the event. Send a personalized message referencing your conversation and offer ways to stay in touch. Become a connector yourself, introducing people in your network who might benefit from knowing each other.
