How to Set & Stick to Goals

The new year is just 2 days away! Rather than make up a half thought-out resolution at 10PM on New Years Eve, spend some time to self-reflect and craft an actionable plan on what you would actually like to see accomplished in 2021.
2021 is OUR YEAR. Let’s set it up for success!
1.) Reflect
Take just 10-15 minutes to sit down with a pen and paper with no distractions. Think about this past year.
What made you happy?
What made you feel successful?
What would you want to improve?
What short-comings have you seen?
From this, write down whatever comes to mind. It can be as big or as crazy as you would like. It can also be as small or as “insignificant” as you would like.
This is all about YOU and YOUR life.
Now, take a look at what you wrote down.
Why did you write down what you wrote down?
Do you see any patterns with your answers?
If so, circle the goals that are similar or overlap. Now from these goals, try to pick out your top 3 goals. By just setting 3 goals you are truly excited about, there is a lot higher chance you will continue to put the energy required in to fulfill these.
Sometimes, a list of 20 goals can be overwhelming and can result in nothing being done.
However, you know yourself the best! If you are able to set and put the energy towards more than 3 goals, GO FOR IT!!
2.) Define Your Goal
Now that you have reflected, it is time to define what this goal actually means.
Make sure to write these goals fully out on a piece of paper so you can easily refer back to this moment.
What is the goal? (ex. Go to the gym more)
What does success look like? (ex. Going to the gym 3 times a week)
How long do you need to do this goal for successfully to call it successful? (ex. Going to the gym 3 times a week for 40 weeks this year)
What does reality look like for this goal? For example, am I doing this new habit with a 90-95% success rate? (ex. Went to the gym 2 times one week instead of 3 times the entire year for 40 weeks)
What steps are needed for you to be able to achieve this goal? (ex. Waking up an hour earlier to go to the gym 3 times a week)
3.) Accountability
Right now, you can feel incredibly excited about these goals and feel like nothing will stop you from completing this. However, try to fast forward and evaluate how this same energy will be in April or September.
Will this goal be met with the same level of enthusiasm?
Probably not, but that is OKAY!
It is perfectly normal not to be as excited about our New Year’s resolutions months after the fact. That doesn’t mean though that that isn’t a goal that we would like to see incorporated into our lives. It just isn’t as new or excited as it was January 1st.
This is why it is important to hold yourself accountable.
Accountability can be found by finding a friend with a similar goal, a coach you hire to help you with your goal and hold you to it, or a person in your life that would serve as an accountability coach (partner, friend, co-worker). This should be someone you trust.
Set a plan with them on how frequently you will check in and how.
Will it be weekly, bi-weekly, monthly?
What kind of check-in will this be? Will you have to show them what you have worked on or progress made?
Are they someone that is going to be encouraging and get you on the right track if you had an off week?
These are all things to consider when finding someone that can help you hold yourself accountable.
4.) Get Excited
This is it! This is your moment that you are dedicating to changing your life!!
It can be scary or intimidating, but you should be celebrating this new adventure to help better yourself and your life.
If you want to create a life you are excited and energized about and need a little help getting started, I am looking for 2 new independent, remote, part-time team members to join me to share and support others to reclaim their health.
