The separation of coal and iron ore is typically done using magnetic separation or froth flotation. In magnetic separation, a magnetic field is applied to the mixture, causing the magnetic iron ore to be attracted to the field while the non-magnetic coal remains unaffected. In froth flotation, a reagent is added to the mixture that causes the iron ore to form bubbles that can be skimmed off the top of the mixture, leaving the coal behind. Both of these methods rely on the differences in physical and/or chemical properties between the coal and the iron ore.
