How to Sell More Trips to Colombia with Ana Yacaman

Welcome to the second episode in the Summer Selling Series.?

Ana Yacaman, Co-founder of The Best of Cartagena, is our guest and we're touching on all things Cartagena and Colombia.?

If you're a travel advisor wanting to sell more of this destination, you're in for a treat.

Optimal Travel Time to Experience Cartagena

Ana shared so many juicy insights including the ideal length of time for experiencing Cartagena and Colombia's rich culture.

She suggests that a 7-10 day trip is perfect for your clients to immerse in the vibrant life of Cartagena.

This time frame allows travelers to enjoy the top attractions, while also indulging in unique, local experiences.

Action Steps:

  1. Plan your clients' itineraries to include must-see sites such as the Walled City, a guided walking tour, and a visit to the Rosario Islands.
  2. Encourage clients to consider visiting between December and February to avoid the rainy season and enjoy sunny, pleasant weather.
  3. Emphasize exploring beyond the popular spots by taking dance lessons or engaging with the locals.

Historical Attractions & Ocean Activities in Cartagena

Ana talked about some of the fantastic activities that make Cartagena a top destination.

Beyond its historical charm, Cartagena offers modern thrills, beautiful natural landscapes, and cultural experiences like Carnaval.

Your travelers should absolutely take time to explore both the historic and contemporary facets of the city.

Action Steps:

  1. Incorporate the beauty of Cartagena's coastline by having your clients spend time at Bocagrande, El Laguito, or Castillogrande beaches.
  2. Book your clients a sunset cruise to savor breathtaking views and delicious local cuisine as the sun dips below the horizon.
  3. Add a stop to an artisanal market, especially in Medellin and Barranquilla, to ensure your clients are able to pick up unique souvenirs and take in local craftsmanship.

Cultural Richness and Historic Significance

Cartagena’s rich cultural and historical background was a focal point of our conversation.

The significance of Palenque and the preserved historical areas, like the Walled City, showcase the depth of Colombia’s heritage.

Being immersed in this area will give a deeper understanding to a dark part of history.

Action Steps:

  1. Include visits to Palenque in your itineraries, so clients can learn about the history and interact with Palenqueras.
  2. Have clients explore the UNESCO-protected Walls of Cartagena and its beautifully maintained historical sites.
  3. Add in local cultural tours to immerse your clients with the heart of the country.

The Rosario Islands Experience

One of the highlights discussed was the tranquility and natural beauty of the Rosario Islands.

These islands offer a serene escape, ideal for nature lovers and those who appreciate star-filled nights away from the city lights.

With options for both day tours and overnight stays, the Rosario Islands promise an unforgettable experience.

Action Steps:

  1. Choose between taking a boat or a land route to reach Isla del Encanto, depending on your clients' comfort with water travel.
  2. Plan a day tour or an overnight stay with local partners like Isla del Sol or Isla Majagua for a complete island experience.
  3. Remind your client to pack essentials like swimwear, sunblock, and a camera to fully enjoy and capture the island’s pristine beauty.

Safety and Practical Travel Advice

I don't think we could've had a conversation about travel to Colombia without addressing how safe it is now to visit the country.

I say that and I also want to dispel a caveat that everyone's definition of safety varies, and your clients will ultimately need to make that determination for themselves.

Ana also provided practical advice for currency exchange and budget-friendly tips, to help your travelers feel prepared and confident on their trip.

Action Steps:

  1. Exchange currency in the U.S. before traveling to avoid fluctuating exchange rates and ensure you have sufficient local currency when you arrive.
  2. Use private transportation for added safety and convenience, especially in crowded tourist spots.
  3. Budget wisely, taking advantage of affordable meals and accommodations that will stretch your clients' travel dollars while enjoying the best of Cartagena.

I absolutely loved my conversation with Ana, as I felt like I was uncovering the beautiful jewel of Cartagena with every experience and story she shared.

I was especially surprised to hear that Colombia was a top exporter of roses, which means that's another experience you and your clients can have when visiting the country.

Similarly interesting was hearing what a great destination wedding location Cartagena is with all its historical charms.

What was the most eye-opening part of this conversation, and does this get you pumped to sell more Colombia to your travel clients?
