How to self rescue when falling through ice.

Falling through ice can be a life-threatening situation, but self-rescue is possible if you act quickly and calmly. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

1. Stay Calm

• Avoid panic: It wastes energy and accelerates heat loss. Focus on breathing steadily.
• Avoid flailing: Sudden movements can break more ice around you.

2. Keep Your Head Above Water

• Orient yourself: Turn toward the direction you came from; the ice there was strong enough to hold you.
• Extend your arms: Spread them out on the edge of the ice to prevent sinking further.

3. Float Horizontally

• Kick your legs: Get your body horizontal by kicking your feet. This helps you stay afloat and makes it easier to climb out.
• Use your elbows: Rest your arms on the ice to distribute weight and help support you.

4. Crawl Onto the Ice

• Use a forward motion: Kick your legs while pulling yourself onto the ice belly-first like a seal. Keep as much of your body in contact with the ice as possible to distribute your weight.
• Avoid standing: Once partially on the ice, roll or crawl to spread your weight further until you reach thicker, stable ice.

5. Signal for Help

• Once you're out of immediate danger:Call for help if others are nearby.Wave your arms or make noise to attract attention if necessary.

6. Get to Warmth

• Head to safety: If you're alone, crawl or roll to shore before standing up, as the ice around you may still be weak.
• Remove wet clothing: Wet clothes draw heat away from your body. Replace them with dry clothes if possible.
• Rewarm gradually: Avoid direct heat like fires; focus on warming the core first (e.g., with blankets or body heat).

• Ice picks or awls: If you have ice picks (or improvise with sharp objects like keys), use them to grip the ice and pull yourself out.
• Stay low and spread out: Always keep your weight distributed over the ice as you move.

How to Prevent Falling Through Ice

• Check ice thickness: Safe ice for walking is at least 4 inches thick; 5-7 inches for snowmobiles.
• Carry safety gear: Bring a rope, ice picks, and a life vest when walking on ice.
• Test the ice: Use a pole to check strength as you go. If the ice cracks, retreat the way you came.
