Social media giants must block under-13s or be hit with 'humongous' penalties, minister says ?

Social Media Age Restrictions Tighten: Social media platforms are being urged to block users under the age of 13. Michelle Donelan, the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation, and Technology, emphasized a "zero-tolerance" stance towards platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok allowing young children access. The move is part of the upcoming Online Safety Bill, which, if passed, will mandate tech companies to swiftly remove illegal content and enforce age-checking measures. Companies failing to implement proper age checks could face fines up to 10% of their annual turnover. Notably, around 60% of 8-11 year-olds in the UK have at least one social media account, as per Ofcom.

How to search for posts on Threads....but not in UK yet ??

Meta's text-based social media app, Threads, is introducing a new feature that aligns it more closely with its competitor, Twitter/X. Adam Mosseri, the Head of Instagram, has described this as "one of the most requested features". This feature allows users to search for posts on Threads.

Previously, the search tab in Threads was solely for finding other Threads users.

The search functionality is currently in its testing phase and is being introduced in Australia and New Zealand. It's expected to be available in more English-speaking countries soon. To use this feature, users can tap the magnifying glass icon at the app's bottom, input their search term, and view accounts with those words in their username. Additionally, they can tap "Search for..." at the results' top to see posts with those words in the caption.

This update follows the recent launch of Threads on desktop. The platform is also working on other features, including an edit button, support for multiple accounts, hashtags, translation, and access for EU users.

Comment: As social media platforms continue to evolve, the introduction of search functionality in Threads indicates the importance of user-friendly features in retaining and growing the user base. This move by Threads not only enhances user experience but also positions it as a strong competitor in the text-based social media space. Let's hope it comes to the UK very soon.
