How SD-WAN can improve your IoT (Internet of Things) connection

Connectivity is becoming an increasingly important part of our lifes. Of course, many people are aware of this. Everything will be connected through millions of connected sensors and smart devices in our homes, offices and cities. The IoT developments are one of the biggest breakthroughs in history of the tech industry.

Companies that uses smart meters, logistics trackers, intelligent sensors, security equipment don’t want to lose internet connectivity at any time, as this can pose very serious problems. They need a solution to maintain internet connectivity when, for example, a fixed internet connection fails.

With Peplink Software-Defined WAN the base station connects to a Peplink MAX BR1 router, instead of connecting to a DSL or fibre line directly, which will lose internet access when the fixed internet connection fails. This way you have always a redundant solution.

How does this work:

The Peplink MAX BR1 routers leverages the existing 4G LTE/3G network to backup the fixed DSL or fibre line. Smart meters, logistics trackers, intelligent sensors, security equipment, and other IoT objects, in both private and public sectors, will maintain internet connectivity via the 4G LTE/3G network when the fixed line fails. The MAX BR1 will continuously monitor the landline internet and will seamlessly switch back to it, once its service restores, to ensure minimum data usage and data cost on the 4G LTE/3G network. The MAX BR1 features a Bandwidth Allowance Monitor to help the customer keep track on the data usage and cost on the 4G LTE/3G network. The MAX BR1 also features a redundant SIM slot, which can house a SIM card from a secondary 4G LTE/3G network provider. It will use the secondary SIM, when the primary 4G LTE/3G network experiences outage or is out of data quota.

And to create an even better 4G LTE/3G connection, you can also use Poynting DASH-1 antennas. This antenna is fully designed for low profile requirements such as Smart Meters, intelligent sensors etc. This omni-directional antenna is suitable for indoor and outdoor use, typically mounted on the top or side of smart meter boxes. The DASH-1 antenna is designed with installation simplicity in mind, while covering the LTE frequency bands 690 – 2700MHz. This antenna has a superior electrical performance over the whole 690 – 2700MHz LTE/cellular bands.
