This past week I was reviewing some things about goal setting. Goal setting and achievement are very interesting topics. When you set a goal you are actually activating your brain. In images taken of the brain, you can actually see the brain light up when setting goals. Goal setting is a scientifically proven way to restructure your brain cells so that you're massively more successful.
Goal setting actually restructures your brain to make it more effective. The act of setting goals affects the neuroplasticity of the brain. Goal setting changes the structure of your brain so that it's optimized to achieve that goal.
I recently read about a study at the University of Texas where MS patients who set ambitious wellness goals have fewer, less severe symptoms than the control group. Goal setting was healing to actually heal the brains of the participants in the study.
You may be thinking about what actually happens when you set a goal?
Step 1 The Amygdala creates emotion and evaluates the degree to which the goal is important to you.
Step 2 The Frontal Lobe ( the problem-solving part of the brain) defines the specifics of what the goal entails.
Step 3 The Amygdala and Frontal Lobe work together to keep you focused on and moving towards your situations and behaviors that lead to the achievement of that goal, while simultaneously causing you to ignore and avoid situations and behaviors that don't.
Keep in mind that all goals are first filtered through FEAR. This is the default setting in your brain. Fear is designed to protect us from danger. If you do not keep pushing past that fear then your motivation circuit in your brain can shut down. The brain's first job is safety. When your FEAR filter is working properly you might feel threats against your financial stability, emotional stability, relationship stability, or business stability.
The way to overcome this FEAR is to visualize yourself actually achieving your goal. The HOW to achieve the goal comes after you set the goal, push past the FEAR filter, and visualize yourself achieving the goal.
