How Science Fiction Can Change The World

"Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea'' from Jules Verne is the first science fiction storybook that I have read and it aroused my interest in science fiction ever since. The reason why I love science fiction is that it provides one an escape to a complex situation but at the same time allowing one to explore and expand our notions of what is human.

While I am trying to gather resources for my upcoming workshop, I manage to compile a list of videos which I find quite inspiring in explaining the importance of science fiction. A common understanding from the videos is that science fiction is not about how one being creative about the future, but also being responsible for it.

On a side note, if you are looking for a good online science fiction story, I would recommend the Manna from Marshall Brain, where it explores two possible outcomes of the ‘robotic revolution’ in the near future. Definitely thought-provoking.

Some technological and social themes explored :

  • brain-computer interface
  • enterprise resource planning
  • class structure
  • effect of artificial intelligence and robots on society
  • proper and improper uses of technology
  • the failings of capitalism to cope with technological development
  • welfare economics and a basic income

Enjoy!

The History of the Future and Why Science Fiction Matters

“Science fiction does matter. It provides an unbiased view of the future and imposes ethical questions that need consideration as we continue to move forward and develop new technologies.”

---------------

Why our world needs science fiction

"Science fiction is not about predicting the future. The future does not exist. Science fiction is here to prevent and invent the future"

---------------

How science fiction can help predict the future

"Free from the constraints of the present and our assumptions of what's impossible, science fiction serves as a useful tool for thinking outside of the box.....science fiction shows us many possibilities. Ultimately, it is our responsibility to determine which we will work towards making a reality."
