How to scale your Bookkeeping Business beyond 100K

If you’ve ever thought of scaling your Bookkeeping business beyond just yourself and a few part time bookkeepers and you’re not sure of the first step to take, you’re not alone.

Many bookkeepers work long hours including weekends and nights around the busy times, often feeling frustrated because their clients really don’t understand the efforts bookkeepers go to get their compliance work done on time.

I love how the fable of the frog in the tepid water demonstrates this dilemma; when you put a frog in a saucepan with tepid water he snuggles in and loves it because it’s like a nice warm, cozy bath. But when the heat starts increasing and it gets hotter and hotter the water isn’t so comfortable anymore to the point when it boils and completely overwhelms the frog and its too late.  Do you feel like the heat is increasing in your business lately or are you at boiling point already?

I’m not a bookkeeper or an Accountant, in fact I’m pretty crap with numbers in general. But I did scale a bookkeeping business with my partner beyond 700K with 12 incredibly talented Bookkeepers and Accountants working for us.

The first step to scale any business beyond you is to systemise it completely.  Most business owners really resist this step because its time consuming and requires ongoing effort to keep the systems updated and current. And the most frustrating thing is, when you don’t keep systems updated and current your team get lapse and start creating their own systems and before you know it everyone is doing tasks their own way and you’re needed IN the business every single day to manage the spot fires as they arise.  Sound familiar?

So, the first step to scaling your business is SYSTEMISE it!
