How To Scale A Consulting Business
Transcript from video:
Here's a classic mistake people make when trying to scale a consulting business. They start with marketing. Their thought is well I've got this awesome service. We've helped some clients. We've done some great things. Now we just need marketing to scale it.
Here's the issue though, how difficult is it right now for you to explain what you do to clients? How challenging is it right now for your client to repeat back the good work you do for them?
So, maybe they feel good about it, but can they repeat it? Did it make sense to them? So now what you're trying to do is you want "marketing", to help "scale" a service that people don't quite understand. Now you understand it, because it's yours. You made it. You designed it. It works for you, but other people are still having trouble understanding what it is that you offer. So, the only way that you're going to be able to use "marketing" to "scale" your business is if you take the step to further clarify what it is you do for your clients.
If your clients can't repeat it back. If your client can't shake your hand and say thank you for something specific, then you've just offered a service. Maybe they enjoyed it, but you're going to have trouble making it grow.
So, again your job is to simplify what you offer into something that the marketplace can clearly hear and clearly respond to. Until you get to that level of clarity there's no level of marking that can make up for it.
