As an employer it is important to try and keep everyone happy and ensure that your staff retention rates are as high as possible. Staff retention is important, but actually over the next few years staff turnover rates are expected to increase, so you should try to do what you can to avoid this.
There are many reasons why someone might choose to leave a job position, although for most people job dissatisfaction is the main reason. When someone asks you for a pay rise and you have to say no, it can be easy for this to lead to bad feeling if not handled correctly. Of course, this doesn't mean that you should simply say yes to a pay rise request rather than upsetting someone, instead you need to make sure that you handle it correctly and that everyone knows where they stand.

The Request For A Pay Rise
First of all if someone is going to ask you for a pay rise then you need to ask them to put this in writing and state the reason for their justification for more money. Simply talking to you and saying they want more money is not enough - there needs to be a solid reason for this and they need to tell you what their reason is. If their job role hasn't really changed and they haven't taken on any new responsibilities then this can be a fair reason for you to say no to their request for higher pay.
Saying No To The Request
If you have to say no to a pay rise then the best way to keep an employee happy is to explain the reasons for you having to decline their request. For example if the business is not in a current financial position to pay out any money then you can give this as your reason. To keep someone happier you could give them an indication as to when the business could be in a better position to reconsider their request properly.
The whole idea is to make sure that they know why you are saying no and that they can understand that your decision to decline their request is justified.

As an employer you probably don't want to give someone a pay rise unless you have to, but sometimes you have to think of this from a different angle. If giving someone a little more money will encourage them to work harder for you or take on more business responsibility then this could work out beneficial to your business. When someone asks you for a pay rise make sure you give it careful consideration. Saying no to their request is fine but you need to make sure that it is justified and that everyone is happy with the decision made and why it has been taken
