How Sandwich was Born?

Earl of Sandwich is noble title in old Great Britain, by the name of the city Sandwich which is located in Kent. That title was created 1660 for a distinguished sea Admiral, Sir Edward Montagu. He was succeeded by his son Earl Second who was the first ambassador of Portugal.

The Earl Second had a great grandson John Montagu as Earl 4th , who is remembered for being the sponsor of Captain James Cook's voyage, and who, in his gratitude, named the islands that he then found the Sandwich Islands, better known today as Hawaii.

He was also a big gambler, the story goes that he would not take a break to eat during his long card games, instead, he asked the servants to bring him a piece of beef between two slices of bread (so as not to get his hands and cards dirty and to be able to hold the cards AND eat at the same time).

?His friends who played cards with him knew this habit, so they also ordered from the servants "just like Sandwich", and that's how Sandwich was born. ?

The original sandwich is a piece of salted beef between two pieces of toast.
