How Sam Became an Equity Partner

How Sam Became an Equity Partner

Master Time Management and Thrive!

I know what you're thinking - everyone already knows time management is a given.

After coaching lawyers for many years, I've learned that there is a HUGE difference between knowing that time management is necessary and actually doing it.

You need to hone a core routine that follows you throughout your career that is designed to help you stay ahead of your day-to-day tasks.?

SAM'S STRUGGLE

Sam was a former client of mine who was a partner at his firm.

He balanced preparation for a trial, managing a heavy caseload, and being a father of four children.

Between studying cases for court, negotiating with other lawyers, and jury selections - Sam was falling apart.

He said:

"I have no idea how to juggle all of this work. It's too much to handle!"

A HUGE MISTAKE

Sam had a scheduled meeting with the Compensation Committee and he looked forward to learning about his bonus and hopefully a promotion to become an equity partner.??

On the day of the meeting, he worked remotely. His calendar was packed with meetings and phone calls, and he completely forgot his meeting with the partners.

His phone rang.

"Hey Sam, we're all waiting for you at the office. Do you think you'll make it today for our meeting?"

Sam froze. He couldn't believe that he had forgotten something so important!

"Hey Jim, I'm sorry I lost track of time. Is it possible to reschedule for another day?"

They set up another meeting, but Sam didn't get the promotion he hoped for because the committee believed he fell short of their requirements.?

Sam felt devastated and completely embarrassed.?

A PLAN OF ACTION

Sam and I worked together to organize his daily tasks, increase his billables and collections.?

We put in place guidelines to keep him on track with his duties to manage his time better and increase his productivity.

Feeling less burned out, Sam had more time to relax and spend time with his loved ones.

Determined to succeed, Sam increased his billable hours and organized his law practice.?

Same felt refreshed for the first time in years. He became enthusiastic and actually enjoyed practicing law.

He was shooed in easily and became an equity partner the next year and also received a substantial bonus.??

5 Time Management Tips to Keep You on Track

? Keep your practice organized

? Write down your tasks for the next day before leaving the office.

? Start your day with the most time-consuming task. (Eat the frog)

? Make sure to take personal time so that you are not burned out.

? Delegate as much as possible.

? Manage your expectations. Progress, not perfection.

Time management is a skill you develop over time as new challenges and opportunities arise.?

Thanks for sharing - it's very true that it is one thing to know all about a topic and quite a different thing to be able put it into action and practice.

I once saw the quote "do you prioritize your schedule or schedule your priorities?" I believe some people think that just because everything is scheduled they have mastered time management. Many times we give time to things that are not really a priority and wonder why things do go as planned. When I shifted to scheduling my priorities, I saw a huge shift. Finding the harmony in all our priorities can make a significant difference.

"You need to hone a core routine that follows you throughout your career that is designed to help you stay ahead of your day-to-day tasks." Such an important sentence Pamela DeNeuve. It is so easy to get off track without doing this (as I know personally). Thank you for sharing this and for your time management tips.
