How salaries may rise in 2020, WeWork eyes new chief, and more top news
LinkedIn Daily Rundown (Asia)
The news Asia professionals need to know now.
When it comes to wage hikes, employees in Asia are best placed. Asian economies take 9 of the top 10 slots for forecasted real salary increases in the 2020 Salary Trends Report, driven by low inflation, tight labour supply and rising productivity in the region. India leads the pack with a predicted salary rise of 5.4% (above inflation) followed by Vietnam (5.1%), Indonesia (4.6%), Cambodia (4.2%), Thailand (4.1%) and Singapore’s 3%, the study of 307 MNCs shows. Argentina (-22%) takes the bottom slot due to its high inflation rate of 53%. Join the conversation.
WeWork is talking with T-Mobile’s chief executive John Legere as well as a few other candidates about taking over the troubled office-leasing startup, reports The Wall Street Journal, citing anonymous sources. Legere has worked with WeWork’s new chairman, Marcelo Claure, to win regulatory approval of his telecom’s tie-up with Sprint, which — like WeWork — is majority owned by Softbank. It’s unclear what role the executive who replaces Adam Neumann, following the implosion of the company’s IPO plans, would have under the new arrangement. Join the conversation.
Malaysian carriers have been barred from starting new flights to the US. The Federal Aviation Administration has downgraded the Asian country’s air safety rating, a move that’ll also mean additional checks on Malaysia-registered airlines at American airports. According to the FAA, its Malaysian counterpart is “deficient in one or more areas” such as technical expertise, record-keeping and inspection procedures. The move stalls AirAsia X’s plans to add new transpacific routes and threatens flag carrier Malaysian Airlines' codesharing pacts with its partners. Join the conversation.
Japan’s Fukushima – devastated in the 2011 tsunami and nuclear meltdown – is set to make a comeback as an energy hub. Eleven solar and 10 wind power plants costing $2.7 billion will come up at the abandoned site, Evwind reports, citing newspaper Nihon Keizai Shimbunn. Together they will generate 600 MW of power – two-thirds of the Fukushima nuclear plant’s output. The eventual goal? The Japanese government wants green energy to account for 13-14% of its total mix by 2030. An 80-km grid will also be built to cater to Tokyo’s electricity needs. Join the conversation.
Artificial intelligence is going to change the landscape of work, and those workers who lean a lot on "intuition" and "creativity" will be the ones least affected, according to a recent MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab report. So which jobs are creative enough to keep AI away? LinkedIn spoke to several software engineers and discovered that many perceive themselves to be irreplaceable "artists," while others are preparing for the day they will have to hand off their "constrained" jobs to machines. Idea of the day: Facebook's Julie Zhuo reminds us that there is no such thing as an ideal balance between our personal and professional lives. Instead, it's all about determining what matters to us now and acting based on those priorities.
"At the end of the day, achieving balance means that our actions flow from our big-picture priorities. It means we get out of reacting daily to what’s thrown our way and instead make intentional decisions to follow the life plan we want, not what someone else tells us we should want."
