How to Run Your Agency While Being a Present Mom

Let’s talk about something real: motherhood changes everything. It shifts how you think about your business, your life, and your time. Honestly, being a mom feels like an entirely new stage of entrepreneurship because it changes you at your very core. Suddenly, you’ve got this tiny human who becomes your absolute top priority—and that’s how it should be.

?My Journey from Law to Owning My Own Business??

For those who might be new here or just stumbled across this, let me give you a quick backstory. I was an attorney for four years, but I made a huge pivot. Why? Because I wanted work that lit me up, excited me, and gave me the flexibility to be the kind of mom I wanted to be. I didn’t want to be stuck in the grind, missing those moments that matter most.?

Fast forward 20 years (how wild is that?!), and I can say starting my own business has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It’s allowed me to show up for my kids when they needed me most—whether it was navigating developmental delays or simply being there.?

Now, I want you to know that you can do this too. You can run a successful agency and still be an engaged, present mom. Yes, you can have it all. No, you cannot do it all—and that’s okay.??

The Truth About "Doing It All"??

People ask me all the time, "How do you do it all?" Here’s the secret: I don’t. I ask for help, and I’m not ashamed to say it. I prioritize what lights me up and outsource the rest. This wasn’t an easy mindset shift, especially as someone used to managing everything myself, but let me tell you—it’s life-changing.

7 Tips for Balancing Motherhood and Running Your Agency??

Here are my top tips for making it work, whether you’re a brand-new mom or just figuring it all out as you go (because let’s be real, none of us have it all figured out).??

1. Nap Time Is Gold??

In those early newborn days, nap time is your MVP. While some people say, "Sleep when the baby sleeps," I was over here trying to keep my business afloat. I didn’t take a maternity leave—I just tried to keep things at status quo. During nap times, I tackled client work, answered emails, and even tidied up the house (because let’s face it, chaos can’t reign everywhere).??

If you’re breastfeeding, pumping can be a lifesaver. And here’s the real hack: freeze that liquid gold. Frozen milk = freedom. It gives others the chance to feed the baby while you get a moment to breathe—or even better, shower. Bonus tip: get yourself a hands-free pump. Total game-changer.??

2. Lean On Your Team??

Before your baby arrives, make sure you’ve got a solid support system in place. Whether it’s a full team, a VA, or even just one person, having someone to manage client communication and daily tasks can be a lifesaver. Trust me, you’ll need it. Unexpected things will come up (hello, colicky baby!), and knowing your business is in good hands makes all the difference.??

3. Maintenance Mode Is OK??

In those early days, your focus doesn’t have to be growth. When my second son was born, I had a newborn and a toddler under two—and let me tell you, survival mode was real. I gave myself permission to focus on keeping current clients happy and let go of anything extra. This is why I created the Agency Accelerator, so moms like you can build businesses that sustain themselves during those tough seasons.??

4. Let Go of Mom Guilt ?

Here’s the deal: mom guilt is real, but it’s also pointless. Whether you feel bad for working or bad for wanting a break, it’s time to let that go. Work can even feel like "me time," and there’s nothing wrong with that. You’re allowed to enjoy your work—and if no one has told you that before, I’m telling you now.??

5. Maximize School Hours??

When your kids start school, their school day becomes your workday. It’s amazing what you can accomplish with a set schedule. You’ll find yourself prioritizing the work that truly matters and becoming wildly efficient. Every minute counts, and you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve during those precious hours.??

6. Your Passion Will Return??

If you find yourself losing your spark for work after becoming a mom, you’re not alone. It’s totally normal. Your world shifts when you have kids, but here’s the good news: as they grow and become more independent, your drive and excitement for your business will come back. Motherhood has a way of deepening your purpose and giving you fresh clarity.??

7. Give Yourself Grace?

This might be the most important one. Balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship is messy. Things will slip through the cracks—emails, forms, papers, you name it. And guess what? That’s okay. You’re human. Give yourself grace to focus on what matters most in the moment. Your business will still be there when you’re ready.??
