How rTMS is Helping Get Unwell Employees Back to Work

A recent study reported in the Times newspaper has found that absence from work due to ill health costs the economy around £150 billion per year, and that this figure is rising rapidly.

? Long Term Pain Issues

? Fibromyalgia

? Chronic Fatigue

? Long Covid

? And many more

Chronic illnesses such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome and long-covid, as well as long term pain problems, make up a significant part of this problem, and are especially difficult to manage thanks to a lack of effective treatments. Many people with these conditions can find full-time work impossible, or require regular time off due to flare-ups of their symptoms.

What Causes Them?

These conditions can affect anybody, and the onset is often triggered by some kind of highly stressful or traumatic experience. This can be a single event, such as the loss of a loved one or a car accident, but it can also be related to a chronic “burnout” type situation, which is common in highly demanding jobs. The latter situation is especially problematic, as returning to the intense environment of these jobs after a chronic illness begins can be incredibly difficult, and can often trigger a return of symptoms. Not only is this of great concern to the person involved - who often begins to fear for the future of their career - but also for the company, who now have to choose between continuing to pay a member of staff who is frequently absent, or letting a valued member of their team go.

What Are the Treatments?

The latest research into the chronic conditions mentioned above, which can cause chronic pain, fatigue and brain fog, points to the central nervous system being responsible. Studies have shown that increased activity in specific areas of the brain leads to altered processing of information, both from within our bodies, and from our surroundings. Traditional treatments, such as painkillers and anti-depressants, do not have the ability to specifically target these issues, which is why they have been unsuccessful at treating them.

Recent breakthroughs in our understanding of these conditions have opened the door for the development of intelligent new treatment options, including rTMS and peripheral magnetic stimulation. These technologies have been used for many years to treat psychiatric disorders, but studies in the last decade have found them to have a much wider use than initially thought. The unique benefit of these treatments is their ability to target very specific areas of the brain - in a pain-free and incredibly safe way - in order to return their activity back to a healthy level.
