How to 'Rock" Your Self Belief

A few weeks ago, my son blagged his way into the role of Zach, the lead guitarist in the musical The School of Rock. Dumbfounded, I asked him, “Don’t you need to know how to play the guitar in addition to singing and learning your lines?”. In a voice that indicated exasperation he answered “Yes - but how hard can it be? I already play the violin and read music. Besides I have 8 weeks.” I laugh to myself that he is already fitting the stereotype of the male that comfortably applies for a job while meeting only 40% of the criteria while the woman wants to meet 110% to feel comfortable. Yesterday, he had his first band rehearsal and he watched a few 'YouTubes' in advance and did just fine. Go figure.
It makes me wonder how often lack of self-belief holds us back from even trying to achieve a desired outcome. So, if you have something in mind you’d like to achieve (but don’t think you have what it takes) Today’s Take Action Tip is to go ahead and ‘rock it’. To follow are some strategies that may help:
1. Assess what transferable skills and resources you have–eg. What are the skills, experiences and resources that you already possess which can move you closer to your desired goal?
2. Decide who you can ask to help you – Who can mentor, teach, sponsor, COACH :), support or hold you accountable?
3. Manage your negative self-talk – Thank your 'monkey' mind for trying to protect you from failure and then ask yourself: “Who would I be without that thought?”.
4. Challenge yourself every day – Get out of your comfort zone in some small way daily. Once you have stretched out of it, you will never fit back in.
5. Create a vision of success – Close your eyes and imagine, in Technicolor detail, what you will be hearing, seeing, feeling and doing when you achieve your desired outcome.
