How robots and automation are changing construction. Let's meet the webinar panel!
How is the construction industry aligning itself, within the modern manufacturing landscape?

How robots and automation are changing construction. Let's meet the webinar panel!

With just one week to go until KUKA and Future Cast host their collaborative, thought-leading panel discussion, we thought we'd introduce you to the panel members. All have a vested interest in the construction industry: an industry sector that is starting to realise the benefits that can be achieved through the adoption of digital technologies, and automated processes.

But aside from the benefits that automated processes can typically deliver, such as productivity gains, how are automated technologies able to address other challenges within manufacturing, such as skills shortages?

  • We will discover how digital technology can diversify and improve the construction site and quarry of the future to include more women and youngsters, through skills transfer initiatives.
  • How research and development programmes are identifying aggregate alternatives, to mitigate supply chain shortages and align with circular economic principles.
  • How 3D printing, additive manufacturing and Future Cast's 3D construction printing is paving the way to cost-efficient and fast modular construction processes that can be applied across the industry.

Ultimately 'How are robots and automation changing construction'.

Here, are your panel:

Adam Hudson, Construction Sector Manager, KUKA UK.

I am the KUKA Robotics Sector Manager for Construction in the UK. I’ve been at KUKA for 6 years and come from a background of mechanical engineering, but have found myself working increasingly in automation sales over the last twenty years. I live with my wife and seven-year-old daughter in Denby Dale, which is in a bit of Bermuda Triangle between Huddersfield, Wakefield and Barnsley. In my free time I like to play the guitar, cycle and ride motorbikes.

Dr. Julia Power, Geotechnical Analyst, Future Cast

Julia is a geo-technical laboratory technician and quality manager at Future Cast as and is currently researching ways to implement Circular Economic principles in the construction and quarry industries. Recent topics under review are the use of locally sourced construction and demolition waste as replacement aggregate in concrete, thus reducing embodied carbon in two ways, and the use of aerated recycled glass spheres as a lightweight aggregate replacement to improve the thermal properties of concrete while at the same time preventing a reusable resource from going into landfill. In 2012 she accepted a funding offer from the Irish Research Council to begin research into the effects of ultraviolet light exposure on mitochondrial DNA, with a view to developing a suite of prognostic biomarkers for skin cancer risk, culminating in the award of a PhD. She has worked as a water analyst for an environmental remediation project, as a lab technician investigating a novel form of cancer therapy and as an assistant lecturer in inorganic chemistry and molecular biology. She is also employed by the Centre for Talented Youth Ireland teaching enrichment classes for gifted young students in varied subjects including chemistry, forensic science and codes and cyphers. In her spare time, she volunteers at the Leitrim Animal Welfare Centre helping to socialise neglected dogs and puppies.

“The future of the construction industry in the EU is threatened by a chronic labour shortage exacerbated by the COVID crisis. The shortage of construction workers in the EU is expected to increase in the future due to a declining population and an ageing workforce. We will develop innovative vocational education & training that will assist women working in or considering a career in construction industry to progress to visible roles within the industry. In so doing, we will increase the attractiveness of the industry for others, thus leading to a greater number of women choosing the sector.”

“The pathway to pursuing an engineering career can be challenging, though emerging niche markets, such as construction, are recognising the benefits of robotics and automation, thus making available opportunities for youngsters to expand their skillsets within emerging sectors. Our youngsters can help to shape Industry 4.0. with a future in the fields of robotics and automation. Traditional trades no longer attract the interest they did in the 80’s and 90’s and they are being given over to robots, but as the skills gap widens, we must be encouraging the next generation into trades such as construction, with ambitions of becoming our digital manufacturing ambassadors!.”
