How are the roads on your DevOps journey?
“This is the way” Mandalorian
This spring brings us back to Dell Technologies World in Las Vegas and coming with me on the plane and a quick Lyft ride from the airport is an itinerary and map for a DevOps journey for our customers. As adventures in marketing go, the planning, process, and anticipation of preparing for events are very much like a journey. Sometimes when new experiences and processes are injected (and after a few virtual years) it can feel like we are machete-ing through jungles, rolling downhill into dark valleys without a Wi-Fi signal and ruck sacking up high mountains. Thankfully, some repeatable best practices steered us right on track to bring our customers the BEST DTW ever! I know that I have drawn for you a very dramatic picture; but not all new territories can be easily crossed. In fact, they can be exactly that - new and uncharted territories with surprises around every pothole.
While marketing experiences and events are short-lived in planning and can be easily repeated by establishing best practices, the shared experience of something new isn’t too much different than what other business units in organizations navigate. Taking this narrative into account, I will now pivot to a longer look back in relation to the changes in software development. From the advent of the internet, software development has run our compute, storage, network and now a multi-cloud world. As someone who witnessed first-hand the migration from waterfall to agile development in-house, the changes to an organization can be much like a long and drawn-out trek with rippling tectonic shifts along the way. The challenges that agile development and cloud native deployments have introduced may include the widening of the gap between application developers and IT operations. This is where the rise of DevOps comes into the picture.
As customers descend on this year’s conference, understanding how new modern IT is affecting them is part of a universal experience we can focus in on. Who in your business is aligned with application developers and is there good support of microservices, containers and Kubernetes or somewhere in between? Is it chaotic sprawl and hostage multi-cloud instances? ?Do you desire to reduce cost of sprawl and increase mobility between on-premises and in-cloud solutions? What about being part of a developer community? How do you talk about DevOps and how automation practices are becoming the “scary newness” in your organization??

What I have discovered through my own learnings since I first heard about a containers and cloud native “things” (probably 2017), as well as being part of the launch of PowerProtect Data Manager (DTW 2019) is that Dell already has the foundation of resources that really understand the customer’s DevOps journey. In fact, Dell Digital has navigated the road less traveled and is a stellar example of how to navigate the adoption of a scalable containerized solution. The BEST part about this years’ experience is that a LOT of us will be at DTW this year. You will be able to find us at the DevOps and Kubernetes EXPO booth on Monday evening when the doors fly open at 6:00pm. In addition, there are many Hands-on-Labs and Interactive Demos to participate in.
