How Richard Changed His Definition of - A Good Lawyer -

Meet Richard

For years, Richard believed the definition of a "Good Lawyer" was etched in stone.

When we discussed the roots of his beliefs Richard said,?

"I think it began in college and later law school. Self-sacrifice was the gold standard for success. All-nighters, trying to get my work done no matter what."

Richard's Old Definition of Good Lawyer:

  • Long nights fueled by adrenaline
  • Little sleep, sacrificing health
  • Unbalanced meals and little time for exercise
  • Saying "yes" to everything, leading to burnout
  • Defining worth by billable hours
  • Bragging about little sleep as a badge of honor
  • Relying on alcohol or medication to cope with stress
  • Working constantly, neglecting relationships and personal life
  • Feeling stressed, overwhelmed, and unhappy
  • No time for family
  • Being estranged from my children

Richard Was Sick and Tired

As Richard got older, his definition of a "good lawyer" took its toll on his mental, physical, and emotional health.

Richard was always mildly depressed and sleep-deprived. His long nights, endless work, and stress were a liability and not an asset.

Sound Familiar?

Unfortunately, this narrative is far too common in the legal profession.

Lawyers, despite their high salaries and respected positions, face a hidden challenge: poor mental health.?

Studies show they're more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, and even addiction compared to others.?

The pressure to be perfect, endless work hours, and a competitive atmosphere create a breeding ground for stress and burnout.?

This takes a heavy toll on their well-being, harming relationships, lowering productivity, and even leading to thoughts of suicide.?

Richard's New Reality

To his surprise, Richard realized he could make more money and be more productive by redefining his beliefs about a "Good Lawyer"

Richard's New Definition of "Good Lawyer"

  • Prioritizing sleep, ensuring optimal health and focus
  • Eating healthy meals and exercising regularly for physical and mental well-being
  • Setting boundaries, learning to delegate and say "no"
  • Creating a manageable workload and prioritizing work-life balance
  • Mastering stress management techniques and adopting healthy coping mechanisms
  • Cultivating a positive mindset, promoting optimism and joy
  • Enjoying time with family and friends, fostering meaningful relationships
  • Embracing personal pursuits and hobbies
  • Feeling empowered, productive, and content
  • Discovering that success and happiness go hand in hand

By prioritizing well-being and balance, he discovered a more fulfilling and productive way to live and work.?

Richard's story is a testament to the transformative power of redefining success.?

?

I’ve just gotta say that I’ve read Richard’s story. I’ve shared his pain. But I’ve been a very good criminal defense lawyer for 23 years. I know what he went through, I struggled with substances but finally put them down. I’m effective because I do the work. I both try and appeal cases, and my formula for success has been hard work. I read cases at least 20 hours a week just to keep up. My experience is hard work beats talent. I think I have some, but not as gifted as much younger guys. But I will stay up and do what you will not for a week so that I know and can do things you cannot and don’t know how the next week in trial. I learned from some of the best in Houston. Save a few their personal lives were train wrecks. I don’t now, at least in my area you can be average or savage. Maybe transactional lawyers can find balance. Trial lawyers can’t. And I’m not talking about litigation. Two different disciplines. When I can’t ring the bell I need to find something else to do. Average lawyers can’t command the same fees, wind up with huge dockets to pay the bills, and it just snowballs. I knew what I signed up for my first year in school.
