How to Revive Your Dying Writing Career

How to Revive Your Dying Writing Career

Part of what I do as a coach inside the biggest freelancing community in the Philippines is answer questions from our mentees.

?

And today, I got tagged in a question about what to do when you wanted to go back to writing.

?

As a writer, I am very much familiar with the love-hate relationship we have with writing as pen-wielders.

?

I have attempted to quit writing so many times. Yet anytime I go through hardships, I come running back to it in one click.

?

So let me share with you what I shared as advice from one writer to another.

?

Now that you've accepted your current status, it will be much easier for you to get started again.

?

So for one, remember that academic writing practices and rules like journalism and literature is totally different from content writing and copywriting.

There are certain expectations to grammar, context, and syntax that are not applicable to what we do here as freelance content writers.

And that means you have to relax a bit. Remember, we're writing for audiences that barely read.

So it means so much more to get a feel of who you're writing for instead of keeping the grammar rules in mind.

Second, read voraciously. Consume everything you can.

Fill your mind with ideas and inspiration, and practice how you can contradict your ideas.

?

The more you become eloquent with ideas, the better you will be at writing for people.

?

Have fun. Play devil's advocate. Review the beliefs you had in the past and question if it's still the same.

?

Read everything from blogs, books, articles, and everything in between. This way you sharpen your brain and also rekindle your curiosity.

?

Share your inner conversations and conundrums. Other people might be thinking of the same things. Your brain farts may just be the right prompt that sparks deep conversations.

?

Hang out with people you don't know and discover new things about you.

?

Focus on your growth and document your experience through journals, quick notes, or blog posts.

?

Explore your limits. Identify your fears and see how you can slowly get over them.

?

Writing is only for the brave because you are facing your reflection and revealing your truths.

?

Not everyone can handle that. That's why we writers are troubled souls, and the world sometimes have a hard time understanding why we try to solve our internal conflicts through words.

?

Whether you choose to show your prose in public or enjoy being pensive in your private space, what's important is to start and don't stop until your murky mind becomes clear.

I love all of these tips, especially the one about reading. I think people skip that step, not realizing how important it is. Reading shows us words in action. The written word is a guide to how all of the rules work. If you pay close attention as you read, over time, you can improve your writing skills much faster.

This is fantastic advice, especially for us Filipino freelance writers! The point about letting go of super strict academic writing rules really resonates. It can definitely be a mental hurdle to overcome. And 'read voraciously' - absolutely! Filling up on inspiration and different perspectives is like fuel for the writing fire. Thanks for sharing these tips.
