As a leader, I understand that my position comes with a certain amount of power and responsibility. With this power comes the ability to shape the direction of my company and influence the people that work for and with me.?
I firmly believe leaders must use their power for good to create positive change in the world. So, how can we do this effectively?
First and foremost, an essential aspect of responsible leadership is recognizing that our power is not unlimited. Yes, we may be the head of the organization, but every member of the team contributes to its success. All team members should be heard, appreciated and empowered along the way. It also knows that anyone with a role that leads others naturally holds more power; therefore, our ability to ensure we are not abusing it is essential for creating a culture of healthy performance practices.
Secondly, influential leaders embrace a transparent and open decision-making process that involves all stakeholders. Seeking feedback from different sources within the team will lead to collaboration and creative problem-solving, which will drive the organization forward.
Thirdly, as leaders, we must model the proper behaviour for those around us. We must consistently demonstrate integrity, empathy, and understanding – the characteristics we want our organization to epitomize.
Fourthly, every leader needs to embrace mistakes; the goal is not to be perfect but to learn and grow from our experience. When an unexpected error arises, be transparent, and communicate with the team. A true leader empowers others to fix what is needed and to create a safe environment for optimal performance.
Responsible leadership involves taking ownership of our impact at both the organizational and social levels. By recognizing our influence, we can take steps to create a positive impact on our team, partners, and the community.
Our responsibility as leaders is overarching, and we must approach our power with great care, empathy, and collaboration with all parties connected. Being an effective leader means creating and communicating a vision, empowering others to achieve it, embracing failure, and having transparency. Most of all, we leave the world surrounding us a little better than we found it.
