How responsible waste management keeps our oceans clean
EnviroServ Waste Management (Pty) Ltd
Leading the waste management industry for over 45 years
Discarded plastic, industrial waste and unwanted fishing nets are a growing problem for the world’s oceans, despite decades of efforts to reduce such marine debris.
Around the world, marine species are affected by entanglement in, or ingestion of marine debris, and there is concern over the potential impact on human health of toxic substances released by plastic waste in the ocean.
World Ocean Day is celebrated globally on June 8, raising the profile of the ocean and inspiring continuing action year-round to protect and restore the ocean, which covers more than 70% of the planet. The theme for 2023 is “Planet Ocean: tides are changing.”?The United Nations is joining forces with decision makers, scientists, private sector executives, civil society representatives, indigenous communities, celebrities, and youth activists to put the ocean first.
An integrated waste management system is the best way to keep land-based waste from entering waterways and the ocean in the first place. EnviroServ Waste Management can assist with all waste systems involved in collecting, transporting, processing, recycling, treating and disposing of waste.
Recycling and reducing single-use plastics are part of the drive towards the circular economy which can prevent waste from ending up in the ocean.
Another challenge is inadequate public awareness and education on proper waste management. Many people are unaware of the impact of their waste on the environment, and the importance of proper disposal and recycling. Education can increase participation in waste management programmes.
Both individuals and businesses have a significant role to play in reducing waste, which is essential in preventing ocean pollution.
