How Resilient Are You? — Take a RL Self-Assessment
Resilient Leadership, LLC recently expanded their standalone Self-Assessment tool to measure how you, as a leader, cope with an increasingly challenging and dynamic world. This assessment has been carefully researched and organized to provide an insightful look at how you see yourself through the lens of the Resilient Leadership model. The assessment is composed of 15 statements that will help identify your natural tendencies for action in a variety of conditions we'll identify below. Our questions are categorized in three leadership dimensions, Less Anxious Presence, Stay Connected and Lead with Conviction each of which has a bearing on your day-to-day functioning. Let’s take a deeper look into the three leadership dimensions and what it means to be a Resilient Leader.
We define Resilient Leadership as the capacity to “lead with calm, clarity, and conviction in the midst of the anxiety provoked, by increasing complexity and accelerating change.” Resilient leaders are able to maintain a healthy balance in the three key dimensions that comprise Differentiation of Self, as it is defined in the Resilient Leadership model.
Based on our definition of Resilient Leadership, the assessment statements measure the extent to which a leaders’s behaviors reflects those of a Resilient Leader.
The first dimension of the Resilient Leadership model is “Less Anxious Presence.” The statements in this category explore how successful you are at achieving a healthy balance between thoughtful vs. reactive functioning. Every leader—indeed every person—must learn how to live with and manage the everyday anxiety that is simply a part of life. Effective leaders must also learn how to manage interactions in highly anxious situations, without being caught up in the world of reactivity that surrounds those interactions. Leaders in particular, must develop the skills needed to remain calm and thoughtful if they are to be effective in helping others they work with to remain focused and productive. This requires a commitment to self-care the first responsibilities of leadership.
“Lead with Conviction” is the second dimension of the Resilient Leadership model. The statements in this category explore how well your behaviors reflect a strong and stable sense of “self”—someone with clear values and principles, and the ability to act in accordance with those values regardless of the resistance you may encounter. Resilient leaders are able to deal with the inevitable pushback that they encounter when their vision for the future is not yet universally shared by those they lead or partner with. They are able to do this, without taking personally the behaviors of those whose actions often feel like deliberate sabotage. Leading with conviction requires a willingness to take risks, the courage to act boldly, and the stamina to persist over the long haul.
The third dimension of the Resilient Leadership model is “Stay Connected”. The statements in this category explore the nature of your relationships, and how well you are balancing the polarity between the basic human need to be an independent person, with an equally strong need to be thought well of by others and accepted as a valued member of the group. Resilient leaders know the importance of remaining connected to those who think or act differently than themselves—even to those who may be adversaries. They are able to resist the instinctive tendency to withdraw from such people or from anxiety-laden relationships or situations. In the same way, when what is most needed is objectivity and fairness, resilient leaders do not let themselves become overly close to individuals or groups to the point that they lose objectivity and act more out of their “feeling self” than their “thinking self”. Neither do they let anxiety-driven behaviors slide into over- or under-functioning.
We sincerely believe that with the RL Self-Assessment, you will be on your way to finding new and rewarding insights into effective, clear, and self-differentiated leadership practices.
