How to replace a PT forever
George Dobson
Health & Fitness Consulting System for Software Engineers/ sedentary workers to Optimise Metabolism and transform their quality of life (Clients lose 50lbs ?? in 6 months)
I used to be a PT. I switched to online coaching because it allows me to control ALL aspects of a client's journey. The training, nutrition, recovery, mindset, habits, organisation into lifestyle, metabolism/hormones and more...
This produces much better results. It's obvious why, right? Because factors such as nutrition are paramount to a short AND long-term fat loss goal. I got into this to get my clients the best results. it's fun to me!
Having a PT has 1 benefit; They are there in person to make you do the exercise right (presuming they're competent. Which in most cases they are not).
I'd argue that this inherent "benefit" is not a positive factor at all. It's a crutch.
If you've ever seen the TV show "The Biggest Loser" you know where I'm going with this.
Some people get results, but most who do lose fat, stop getting those results when they leave the environment where the PT forces them to take action.
I can talk about the "Hard work mentality" PTs enforce out of ignorance, but that's for another article. Today I want to show what I do with clients to reduce this crutch. Not from a mindset/accountability framework either (again, for another article).
From the technical side: Video analysis
How can video analysis be better than a PT in-person?
Let's break it down.
I taught myself advanced movements like handstand pushups in a matter of weeks by recording the exercise, comparing it to preferable technique, identifying the differences and fixing it.
This pairs the kinaesthetic feel of the exercise with technical knowledge and closes the feedback loop from set to set. Which gets you results in weeks not months/years.
Now yes, if you don't have the technical knowledge you have to get it from someone. Either a proven coach or the internet (if you have lots of time to research).
This is a superior method because you develop an understanding of the mechanics of the movement so you never fall into bad habits (which you will otherwise.) And that understanding is paired with how it feels.
With a PT you never know because most aren't concerned with teaching you, they want to keep you on as a client. Forever needing them.
As you progress through an exercise, your weaknesses expose themselves. Progression is about strengthening these weaknesses.
Eg lower back rounding in a Romanian deadlift may occur as you progress weight.
In the best-case scenario, you stop working the correct muscles.
Worst case, you get injured.
If you use this system, none of that happens.
Not having this system is why 95% of gym goers can be training for years and not get meaningful results or maintain what they do get.
It's also why I'm so confident training only 3 days a week and having my clients do the same.
Anyway, I linked my IG below showing me doing this with handstand pushups. You'll see my clients going from assisted push-ups/chin-ups to weighted chin-ups and dips with this system as they drop fat.
Make sure to follow and say Hi. Always happy to help
