The colder, drier months are such a fun time for your skin. Dry, flaky, dull skin anyone!? And perhaps even some breakouts too. So what is the best way for you to deal with annoying dry or flaky skin? Here is some info and tips from DermRF.com on the causes of dry skin and how to cope so you can best prepare your skin for the colder, drier months and beyond.
Plenty of things can make skin look or feel dry, including genetics, certain illnesses, medications, aging, and climate. You can't control the weather or the date on your birth certificate, but the good news is that you can replenish dry skin and help keep it from getting too dry in the first place. So why does your usually normal skin get so dry in the first place during winter? When it's cold outside, the humidity drops. This lack of moisture in the air leads to visible skin dryness. Turning up the heat, cozying up to a fire, or taking a hot shower may make your dry skin worse. The heat may feel good, but it can also be dehydrating.
And what about the opposite too…why does skin get so dry in the summer? In the warmer months, most people expose more skin to the environmental elements. Heat and wind evaporate skin's natural surface moisture. So do UV rays, especially if you get a tan or sun burn. Plus, chlorinated pools and saltwater are dehydrating to skin too, and the list goes on. So it really is important to moisturize and hydrate your skin year round.
How to Treat Dry Skin
There are 3 very important words attached with treating dry skin: Exfoliate. Hydrate. Moisturize. I exfoliate my face and body with ENHANCEMENTS Micro-Dermabrasion Paste 2-3 times a week. If you're new to exfoliation, more than once a week may be too irritating for your skin, so start slow. The next step is to drench your skin from the outside in. For your face, try a hydrating serum that contains hyaluronic acid in it and then apply your moisturizer on top of the serum to seal all of that moisture in. Remember to hydrate and moisturize the skin on your body too.
What if your skin is so dry that it hurts? Well, once skin becomes cracked and flaky, it's challenging to get it back on track. Tiny fissures in cracked skin make it even more vulnerable to irritation, so skip the exfoliation and pamper skin by hydrating and moisturizing for several days. Once your skin is in better shape, you can add gentle exfoliation.
To prevent dry skin, skip drying soap and opt for a cleansing cream or foam-free cleanser. Bundle up in the winter and wear sun-protective clothing in the summer. Wear sunscreen every day, 365 days a year. And remember to drink more water, too.
