How to regulate emotion: Breath work training reduced to £9.97

It’s always good to hear from Fusion graduates about how they are developing their own work in the wellbeing space. ?

Recently, I had an email from Dr Louise Oliver who graduated the Fusion programme several years ago. We have stayed in touch and I am in awe of how she has developed her own niche integrating Buteyko breath work with her medical knowledge and the Fusion Therapeutic Coaching model. ?

Breathe Stress Away ?

Breath work has been a hot topic with me for over two decades. When I co founded the Therapeutic Coaching charity Reclaim Life with my good friend and colleague, Dr Kate Smith, the?7-11?breathing technique to calm emotional arousal, was the go-to method we passed on to all our clients. ?

Today, my understanding of how the breath holds the key to emotional regulation has expanded and deepened alongside the emerging theories around the?ventral vagal system. ?

To mark the New Year, I have reduced?my online programme Breathe Stress Away?to just £9.97 and added a PayPal easy payment gateway. ?

If you want to make just one change this year, make it the year you finally take control of your own emotional regulation. Your body and brain will thank you for it! ?

Dr Oliver ?

On her?website, Dr Oliver says: ? I am a GP with over 20 years of experience, Functional Breathing Practitioner & Therapeutic Life Coach.? ? Breathing affects every cell, tissue, organ and system in the body. Breathing efficiently provides the basic foundation for every cell, tissue, organ and system in the body to work efficiently.

Breathing is an automatic process that when efficient promotes health and well-being. Breathing at rest should be through the nose, quiet, slow, driven by the diaphragm and almost undetectable. If your breathing is not like this your body can be trained to breathe efficiently again which can lead to improvements in sleep, feeling calmer and reduced breathlessness with movement.

I combine breathing re-education with holistic life coaching skills to help you ‘be the best you can be’. ?

Louise wrote: ? Dear Frances, ? I loved reading your recent e-mail and I am in wonder how we can change states and alter brain waves. It made me want to share a slide from my group breathing course –?please see attached. ? The study investigated the psycho-physiological (cardio-respiratory and electro-encephalographic parameters) and phenomenological (perceived state of consciousness) after effects of slow nasal breathing (2.5 breaths/min) in 12 experienced meditators. ? ?

They compared the nasal breathing after effects with those observed after a session of mouth breathing at the same respiratory rate and with those related to a resting state condition. ?

They concluded it strongly suggests that the effects of slow nasal breathing, beyond the relative contribution of vagal stimulation, are mainly ascribable to olfactory epithelium stimulation. ? It makes sense from an evolutionary perspective the nose is connected to the amygdala and hippocampus via the olfactory nerve to help the body act and remember what will improve survival and what could threaten existence. ?

Living in the modern world, chronic disease and transitioning from peri-menopause to post menopause makes it more likely an individual will use the mouth to breathe and therefore impact brain function – there is more science on this not just the brain waves. ?

The issue is asking someone to breathe slowly in and out of the nose requires good carbon dioxide tolerance. ? In those individuals who have poor carbon dioxide tolerance breathing in this way will make them feel air hunger (feeling of suffocation) however they can be retrained to become more tolerant to carbon dioxide. I had the pleasure of being a guest on?Liz Earle’s Wellbeing show: ?

Keep up the good work you are doing :) ?

Kind regards, ? Louise ?
