How Regenerative Tourism is Transforming Luxury Hospitality

A Personal Journey: from expatriate to regenerative advocate
My journey in the hotel industry has taken me across four continents, living and working in diverse environments, allowing me to witness firsthand the profound impacts of tourism on various communities and ecosystems.
As an expatriate, I faced numerous challenges and realities, from cultural integration to understanding the intricate balance between development and conservation. These experiences, working for listed companies and Forbes 500 giants, profoundly shaped my vision and revealed the often-overlooked impacts on local communities and the crucial integration between the expat collective and local residents.
When I took the lead of DE CASTRO GROUP in 2018, I had a clear vision: to help entrepreneurs boost profitable, yet responsible, hotel business models that consider both expats and local wellbeing. I realized that small hoteliers were often isolated, facing their own challenges and frequently in need of financial support to implement sustainable measures or in need of finding pro bono consulting to truly help them grow.
I have seen how unchecked tourism can deplete resources and disrupt local ways of life, but I have also witnessed the remarkable resilience and potential of sustainable practices to heal and beyond.
This realization led me to found REGENERA LUXURY, NGO focused on supporting these investors and families who strive to grow their businesses while embedding concepts of charm, purpose, and dreams into their boutique hotels and retreats. These boutique establishments possess enormous power to generate real change and positive impact on their local communities and environments. Through REGENERA LUXURY, we bridge the gap, not only providing resources, networking opportunities, and consulting to help small hoteliers to move into regeneration, but also certifying and accelerating the brands through specialized sustainable marketing, green finance, and our international community of more than 40.000 individuals and companies.
REGENERA LUXURY boosts the 4Cs of Conservation: Conservation, Community, Culture and Commerce to achieve a sustainable future, but we add a 5C, which is Collaboration, as a key driver to actually make things happen and enriching the interaction between local people and the touristand expat collective. - Hector de Castro, Chairman of Regenera Luxury
Indeed luxury hospitality industry is undergoing a significant transformation. Regenerative tourism, a concept that goes beyond sustainability, aims to restore and rejuvenate the environments and communities in which hotels operate. This approach not only benefits the natural world but also enhances the guest experience, creating a deeper connection between travellers and destinations. As Chairman of REGENERA LUXURY, I am proud to share how this innovative approach is reshaping luxury hospitality, particularly within boutique hotels and retreats.
The Rise of Regenerative Tourism
Regenerative tourism is rapidly gaining traction within the luxury sector.
According to the REGENERA LUXURY, the wellness tourism market is expected to reach beyond USD1000 billion by 2024, driven by an increasing demand for sustainable and wellbeing-focused travel experiences.
A report by McKinsey & Company highlights that 87% of travelers want to travel sustainably, and 66% are willing to pay more for brands committed to environmental impact reduction.
Furthermore, a study by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) indicates that sustainable practices could contribute to a $335 billion economic opportunity by 2025.
There is no doubt of where the future of tourism is, and where the younger generations -the future demand- are focusing on.
Boutique Hotels and Retreats Leading the Way
Boutique hotels and retreats are at the forefront of this movement. Brands like Six Senses and Soneva have set exemplary standards by integrating regenerative principles into their operations. For instance, Six Senses’ properties are known for their commitment to conservation, community engagement, and wellness. Soneva, on the other hand, has pioneered initiatives such as waste-to-wealth programs and marine conservation projects, demonstrating that luxury and sustainability can go hand in hand. Also boutique hotels as Monverde Wine Experience Hotel in Portugal or the Hotel Kong Arthur, which lies in a small cobblestone nook around Copenhagen’s historic lakes.
Stakeholder Engagement: Indigenous Communities and Expat Collective
A key aspect of regenerative tourism is the involvement of local and indigenous communities. Historically, these communities, such as the Masaai in Kenya and Tanzania, the Sámi (Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia), the Maya in Mexico, Amazon tribes, the Inuit in Canada and Russia, ancient indian tribes in US, small communities in Thailand, Morocco or Nepal, and much more indigenous groups worldwide, have suffered from the negative impacts of overexploitation by tourism. Their lands, cultures, and ways of life have often been compromised in the face of mass tourism development.
However, a sustainable and regenerative approach is starting to bring positive change. By adopting regenerative tourism principles, luxury hotels and retreats are working to restore the natural environments and cultural heritage of these regions. For example, regenerative projects are helping to rejuvenate ecosystems, reintroduce traditional agricultural practices, and empower indigenous communities through economic opportunities and cultural preservation initiatives.
Other communities, such as the Maasai in Kenya and Tanzania, the Himba in Namibia, and the Aboriginal tribes in Australia, are also witnessing a transformation. By integrating their rich cultural heritage and traditional knowledge into regenerative tourism practices, these communities are not only protecting their environments but also providing unique, authentic experiences for travellers.
Expat collectives also play a vital role in this transformation. Their expertise and investment help drive sustainable practices, ensuring that regenerative tourism projects are both viable and impactful. By collaborating with indigenous groups and expats, luxury hotels can create a holistic approach to sustainability that encompasses environmental, economic, and social dimensions.
Supporting Statistics and Industry Leaders’ Perspectives
The positive impact of regenerative tourism is supported by compelling data. According to a report by Deloitte, 55% of travellers are willing to pay more for services from companies that are committed to creating a positive environmental impact. Moreover, a survey by Ernst & Young (EY) found that 62% of consumers are influenced by a company's ethical values when making travel decisions.
Zurab Pololikashvili, CEO of the UN World Tourism Organization, emphasises the importance of this trend: “Tourism has the power to be a force for good. By embracing regenerative practices, the hospitality industry can lead the way in creating a more sustainable and equitable world.”
Similarly, a good friend and REGENERA LUXURY supporter, Glenn Mandziuk, CEO of the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, highlights the business benefits: “Adopting regenerative tourism principles not only protects our planet but also enhances brand reputation and drives profitability. It’s a win-win for businesses and the environment.”

Success stories in sustainabe and regenerative luxury
To illustrate the transformative power of regenerative tourism, we can look to several successful case studies. Six Senses Laamu in the Maldives, for example, has implemented a comprehensive sustainability programme that includes marine conservation, organic farming, and community education initiatives. These efforts have not only preserved the local environment but also enriched the guest experience by offering immersive, educational activities. Laamu’s sustainability strategy, led by its core value of ‘Local Sensitivity, Global Sensibility’, includes initiatives around energy saving, seagrass conservation, waste reduction, reef protection, and wildlife conservation.? ?
Barefoot luxury with a commitment to conservation, environmental responsibility, and local culture, has always been the philosophy behind Six Senses Laamu.
Another notable example is the Soneva Fushi resort, which has achieved a zero-waste status and actively participates in coral reef restoration projects. Guests at Soneva Fushi can engage in hands-on conservation activities, creating a meaningful connection with the natural world while enjoying the height of luxury.
Future & a Vision: a regenerative path forward
Looking ahead, the future of luxury hospitality lies in embracing regenerative tourism.
