How is it that regardless of the challenge, the lack of leadership is usually the problem?

Business critical challenges can be rising costs, diving numbers, lack of competence, lost market shares, a project gone wrong or being delayed. So why does these things happen?

Of course there are many reasons, from bad decisions, competitors winning market shares, disasters like Covid etc. But often, it is just about bad leadership. If a company, business unit, country subsidiary, or a project team lack the right leadership – it is bound to go wrong. People don’t know what to do and what is expected from them and with no feedback or follow-up, it is almost impossible to do a good job.

A great leader sets a clear goal, a strategy to get there, and breaks it down into milestones. A great leader makes sure that everyone understands where they are going and why, and most importantly – how they as individuals can contribute. A great leader listens, delegates and communicates. He/she gives the team the right conditions and peace of mind to do their best and reach the goals. The expertise lies in the organization, a great leader trusts his team. A great leader can motivate and engage his/her employees even if they are closing down the factory. He/she can encourage them to work their best until the last day.

A great leader also has the ability to make tough decisions, follow-up on performance and demand individual responsibility.

I have talked to hundreds of leaders through my career, and the one thing that they all say is: “The most important factors is to listen and communicate.” No matter what industry, challenge or function – communication is key.

What is your thoughts and experiences of leadership – whether you are a leader or not? What are the most important factors in your opinion?
