How to refresh your career when there are no opportunities for promotion
The days of progressively climbing the corporate ladder are coming to a close. If you are feeling like you are not progressing, and you have been proactively managing your career, how can you stay motivated when there are no clear opportunities for promotion?
The answer is to rethink the way you view your career. If you view what others might see as a stalled career, as an opportunity for you to do amazing things, you will be surprised by what you can accomplish.
Take an online assessment: to identify your strengths and skills. It is also helpful to take a personality test as well. The results of the two tests will enable you to identify the roles that are best suited for your strengths, skills and personality. You may be surprised by what you uncover.
Do what you have never done before: What are some things that you always wanted to do, but didn’t, because you were on a set career path? What if you created a portfolio of careers? Imagine the new skills that you would acquire if you created a portfolio of three or four roles within the company. What other departments could fully utilise your skills?
Update your skills: Acquiring a new language is always a good choice. Look at what’s happening in the industry that you work in. Is it directly or indirectly impacting career movement in the organisation? What trends are impacting the industry? If you are not sure, talk to a few experts, using the information to help you to become more marketable and valuable.
Take on a project: Talk to your boss to find out if there are any important projects in the company that are without sponsors. If there are, choose one, then work hard to successfully complete it. Provide regular updates to your boss and other influencers within the company.
Find a coach: Work with a career coach or mentor. Speaking to another person helps you to put things into perspective, and they may give you some new ideas.
These are some of the ways to refresh your career when there are no opportunities for promotion, and the best part is that you will be acquiring new skills in the process.
