How to Reframe The Seven Habits
How to reframe the book “Seven Habits for Highly Effective People”, by Stephen R. Covey
We learn from the book “Switch: How to Change Things When Change Is Hard,” by Chip Heath and Dan Heath, that knowledge doesn’t change behavior.?Actually emotion is the biggest driver in change.?They use the metaphor of an elephant to represent emotion and a person riding the elephant as the rational mind attempting to direct behavior. As you can guess the elephant typically goes were it wants to.
Like me, most of you have probably read “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People”, by Stephen R. Covey.?First published in 1989 it is a classic, which has sold more than 40 million copies in 50 plus languages.
Can you recite all seven habits?
Can your list even one?
Which habit have you mastered?
Do these habits work or better yet, how are these habits learned?
Learning needs reinforcement and practice.?Learning occurs when you have learning experiences.
Forbes magazine published an article by Eric Jackson after the untimely death of Stephen Covey in 2012 that illuminates this question about learning these habits.
“When I saw he died” Jackson laments, “I got a little panic-stricken because I couldn't remember a single one of the seven habits. That scared me because I used to love that little book.?I must have read it 4 or 5 times and tried to habitualize all of the skills.”
Jackson could only recall some of the methods and techniques from the book because he had experiences using them.
