How Not to Recruit Women

How Not to Recruit Women

This is an animated GIF of a really nerdy bubble soccer game that came as part of a recruiting email from a Silicon Valley startup.

How men would read this:

- Fun

- Work hard play hard

- Laid back

- Weird in a good way

- Quirky

- Competitive

- Sweet! It's like back in college!

How women would read this:

- Silly

- Immature

- Grow up already?

- Stay away if you're not nerdy enough to appreciate this game

-  Ug ... it's like back in college ...

No wonder Silicon Valley firms have hard time recruiting women, because the men who are running the show are stuck in Neverland.

O.o I'm not sure what this has to do with gender. That looks fun.

You have made the incredibly basic and naive mistake of painting boys as immature and women as mature, and of associating personality traits and preferences with genders. The idea that you could cast your theoretical responses as representative of females or male) in general is beyond laughable. It's sad. Btw, as a guy, I am not interested in the 'trying too hard to be cool' cultures pictures like this would represent to me. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to try out a goofy game like this with my friends... I'm just tired of companies trying to AstroTurf a culture of "we're super fun'". Btw, a phrase like 'grow up already' just reeks of someone who should grow up already. What an obnoxious, pretentious, juvenile expression.

Niniane, agreed to disagree. I'd also love to hear from women who are not CEO, former CTO, and former engineering manager at Google & Microsoft.
