Often called the forgotten generation, Generation X includes individuals born between 1965 and 1980. In 2023, the oldest Gen Xer will be 58, while the youngest will be 43. They desire flexible work opportunities, the chance to mentor and share their knowledge with more junior professionals, and strong benefits packages to help them save for retirement. Advertise work flexibility, a strong retirement package, and mentorship programs when recruiting Generation X.
Remote or in-person?
Recent researchers have found that Generation X workers value flexibility most in their job decision. A study by EY found that "Gen X respondents ranked workplace flexibility as the most important perk (21%) and are more likely to walk away from their current job if flexibility isn't available (38%)". Besides Millennials, they are the second-highest generation most interested in remote roles.
What Do They Expect From Their Employer?
Characterized as self-assured and resourceful, this group prioritizes autonomy and flexibility. They require few check-ins and are very self-sufficient. Gen X professionals like to feel their supervisors or managers trust them.
Where do they go to look for jobs?
Similar to Baby Boomers, Gen Xers typically have large networks, so most job opportunities will come through referrals or in-person networking.
