Your ability to communicate your ideas is one of the most important factors in leading a successful life.
The quality of communication is typically driven by the following formula: Q= f(K,P,t ).
K= Knowledge
P= Practice
t= Talent
Knowledge being the most important, followed by practice and then inherent talent.
To ensure your ideas/value propositions are remembered or recognized you need to have a mechanism in which to package and deliver them effectively. The Winston Star is one effective mechanism and it consists of 5 key items:
- Symbol: You need to associate your idea/value add with a symbol
- Slogan: You need a simple phrase that captures the idea or value that you add.
- Element of Surprise: Typically one really good example/demonstration to spark the understanding of your idea or proposition.
- Salient: Makes sure your idea or value that you add stands out and isn't diluted by lots of other good but not as important ideas or value adds. Focus the attention on your most important contribution.
- Story: How you did it, how it works and why its important?
The story typically contains two key elements:
- The Vision: Which includes identifying a problem that somebody cares about, finding a solution and establishing possible paths to that solution.
- The execution: Outlines the steps that others can follow to the solution.
