How to Reclaim the Credit for Your Impact
If it was your idea and you worked it, you should claim it.

How to Reclaim the Credit for Your Impact

Ever had your game-changing idea rebranded as a "team effort"? Or watched someone else bask in the glory of your hard work? It's time to flip the script.

Let's keep it real: If you've put in the blood, sweat, and tears, you deserve the recognition. Period. But claiming that credit? That's where things get tricky.

Imagine this: You've poured your heart into a project, only to watch someone else take centerstage. Frustrating, right? But this doesn't have to be your story. There's still time to step up and own your impact, no matter how long ago it happened.

I'm fired up about this because I've seen too many incredible leaders make a major impact without getting the credit they deserve. And trust me, we can change this!

?The Little Red Hen Syndrome

Remember "The Little Red Hen"? That childhood story packs a punch when it comes to workplace dynamics:

  • You have a brilliant idea
  • Others dismiss it
  • You push through the "not my job" attitudes
  • Your vision becomes reality
  • Everyone wants a piece of the pie

Sound familiar? But unlike Ms. Hen, many leaders find their wins lumped into the vague "team success" category.

?Check out my client's story:

  • Spearheaded a game-changing digital transformation
  • Project went from office pariah to company darling
  • Universities studying it, board meetings praising it
  • His name in a report about it? Nope! Not even mentioned
  • He found out by chance! (Yeah… by a friend of a friend.)

Reclaiming Your Spotlight (Without looking like a glory hog!)

?So how do you get the credit you deserve without coming off as arrogant? Listen, it's not about shouting "I did this!" from the rooftops. We need to play it smart.

Remember, owning your impact isn't just about personal gain. When you effectively communicate your value, you're actually doing your organization a huge favor. You're ensuring that successful strategies get recognized, replicated, and refined. This leads to better decision-making, more efficient resource allocation, and ultimately, a stronger company. It's a win-win-win: for you, your team, and the entire organization.

?

Enter my "Proof of Value" (PoV) Strategy

This is your secret weapon for upgrading your brand at work. The PoV is a strategic approach to showcasing your contributions and expertise, typically through thought leadership, podcast interviews, case studies, lunch and learns, presentations and/or reports. It's about creating a narrative around your work that highlights its value and positions you as an authority.

?

Take my client's case, for example.

We're developing a mixed media thought leadership series which includes an article, video and graphic slider document that outlines his innovative process, offering a blueprint for others to replicate his success. The key? We're using only publicly available information about the project, ensuring no company secrets are compromised while still demonstrating his pivotal role.

?

Ready to create your own PoV? Here's how to nail it:

  1. Showcase the "how" and "why" behind your innovation's success
  2. Position yourself as the go-to expert with implementation best practices
  3. Weave in your project's origin story (AKA your brainchild)
  4. Strategically mention key players to share the love (and avoid ruffling feathers)

?

But what if self-promotion makes you uncomfortable?

Remember this: It's not bragging when you've got the goods to back it up. By clearly communicating your value in a strategic way, you're helping your team and organization succeed. That's a win-win.

A quick word of caution: While these strategies are powerful, it's crucial to implement them with awareness of your company's culture and policies. Some workplaces have specific guidelines about project attribution or internal communication. Always use your judgment and, when in doubt, consult with your HR department or mentor. The goal is to shine while creating a positive, collaborative environment.
